The painting of washed concrete slabs does not always work

The painting of washed concrete slabs is more like filling the cavities than applying a paint coat. While wall paints can last up to a year for facade paints, abrasion resistant products must be used for floor slabs. Liquid plastics and gelcoat can be solutions.

Conventional color does not last

In many places, washed-out concrete slabs no longer correspond to the usual beauty ideal of a wall or floor covering. However, since the plates are often still mechanically perfect, many people beautify the beautification of the washed concrete slabs by painting. However, the characteristic surface structure of the washed concrete does not allow conventional paint application.

To stain a washed concrete slab, a kind of sealing of the entire surface must be made, which can extend to filling the bumps and creating a smooth surface. If there is a possibility, as an alternative, the turning of the washed concrete slabs can be considered. The undersides are paintable with usual concrete colors.

Synthetic resins and gelcoat

Castable epoxy resins are suitable for brushing washed concrete slabs. They are available in different colors, which can also be mixed by hand. Synthetic resins with fillers such as sand-like small stones and other liquid plastics, often referred to as concrete finish, can also be used. Garage floor coatings such as gelcoat can also be tried out.

In any case, the painting of washed concrete slabs is preceded by a test phase. After thorough cleaning with a high-pressure cleaner and complete drying out, a primer must be applied, depending on the color or the plastic or resin, which is later in the process. Following the manufacturer's instructions then epoxy resin or other paint spreads should be applied or poured.

In most cases, a painter's brush is the most suitable tool to apply the "paint". Here, in several operations, a full job should be done, which forms a several millimeters thick layer on the washed concrete slabs. Each painting is to be understood as a test, since the individual durability depends on many factors.

Test phase and plaster background

Who wants to delete his washed concrete slabs, must always expect a failure, but only after months, will be obvious. If there is a possibility, only single plates should be painted with the chosen substance and exposed to the average stresses on the total area.

A good method is to place individual panels on a sidewalk or patio, for example. The painted concrete should then be committed as the rest of the plates. If you want to avoid the "stumbling block" and have patience with beautification, you can stroke individual wash-concrete slabs in the middle of the total area with different methods and apply the most durable and durable solution on all slabs the following year.

An alternative is to plaster the washed concrete before painting. This creates a uniform surface that can then be painted like conventional smooth concrete floors.

Tips & Tricks

A short-term embellishment can be achieved with spray pain. They are not very resistant to abrasion, but can be sprayed constantly if you always have several paint cans in stock.
