Symbols for pumps

When using pumps, the requirements are often presented on appropriate circuit and construction plans. Whether for the functions of a pump, control options or other factors, the exact name is defined on the basis of different pump symbols. Below is an overview of the most important symbols for pumps.

Representation of pumps and delivery circuits

Pumps are often integrated in certain fluid circuits such as the Heizwasserkreislauf. Planning is then displayed using appropriate icons in a design or schematic. Consequently, there are numerous symbols that define the pump and other components or properties in a pump cycle:

  • current directions
  • Storage
  • Pumps and compressors
  • drive motors
  • Preparation (or transmission)
  • Valves (shut-off pressure, flow control valves and valve actuation)
  • Work members (actuators and cylinders)
  • Measuring and display devices

Current directions as a pump symbol

The direction of flow of a fluid is represented in the symbols where the direction of flow is relevant by means of appropriate arrows.

Memory as a pump symbol

The storage symbols can be used to display liquid containers with atmospheric connection (ie open). In addition, pipe joints above and below the liquid level. There are also symbols for storage such as gas cylinders, air or compressed air tanks.

Symbols for pumps and compressors

Here a distinction is made between hydraulic and pneumatic pumps. In the case of hydraulic pumps, one direction of rotation can also be specified. There are also symbols for compressors and compressors.

Motors as symbol for pumps

For the engines there are distinctions for example hydraulic or pneumatic motors.

Pump symbols for preparation and transmission

These are symbols which are of great importance, in particular, for the maintenance of corresponding systems. Based on the respective symbols, you can also read the basic maintenance requirements or the scope of maintenance.

So there are symbols for separators, filters and oilers. The oilers are additionally differentiated according to manual or automatic dewatering, and in the case of the filters, whether a clogging indicator is also present if necessary.

In addition, there are also symbols for maintenance units, coolers, heating, temperature regulators or silencers for maintenance.

Symbols for valves in pump circuits

The range of valves is probably the most comprehensive symbolic representation of various valve and control units. Accordingly, further differentiations are made here.

For example, under the control valves, there are directional control valves, flow directions that can be specified, as well as directional valves with intermediate positions and flow paths that range from simple to crossover. So then, for example, a 3/2, 5/3 or 2/2 way valve can be distinguished.

The check valves are also distinguished among other things according to the technical equipment. So there are simple check valves, controlled check valves that open or close at a control, also spring-loaded check valves are shown. Further symbols explain quick exhaust valves, shut-off valves and two-pressure valves.

Even with the pressure valves there are distinctions on how such a valve works, but possibly also how the subsequent or previous pressure valve in the pump circuit must be designed.

So there are symbols for pressure relief valves (also adjustable), whether a follower valve must be shut off or regulated, or whether the pressure control valve itself is also adjustable or provided with a drain opening.

flow control valves

Current valves against additionally the flow direction of the pumped by the pump fluid. Here there are, inter alia, shutter valves or throttle valves for constant cross sections, adjustable throttle valves (also manual) as well as throttle check valves.

Valve actuation symbols in a pump circuit

In addition, the type of actuation is often important. The symbol for the type of actuation can be found at the pump or valve symbol on the left side. This can be a manual operation (muscle power, push or pull button), but also an electrical operation (actuators, solenoids).

In addition, a distinction in the operation for direct pressure actuation, with compressed air or by a fluid. Also ram, springs, roller lever, etc. are symbolically represented here.


Cylinders are distinguished in the symbols by how existing damping (double, piston side, etc.), by mode of operation (single, double, etc.).

Measuring displays and equipment as a symbol in a pump circuit

Here, a distinction is made between the typical measurement data that may be necessary. Thus, there are symbols for temperature measurements, pressure gauges, fluid level meters, flow meters and displays, or speed instruments differentiated.

Tips & Tricks

Of course, some of the symbols can also be combined with each other, that is, for example, if a piston pump with valve control, whereby the controller can be explicitly defined in the symbols.
