Remove synthetic resin paint with three methods

Unfortunately, resin paint also shows its excellent resistance when removing. Despite the sometimes quite rigorous methods that are required, it can usually be removed without leaving any residue as water-based paints. Depending on the carrier material, the range extends from mechanical to chemical to thermal procedures.

Heat only on fire-resistant surfaces

As support layers of synthetic resin paint metals, wood or plastic come into question. Thereafter, the applicable method is to remove Altlack. In the case of plastic, only roughening by means of grinding and the application of a new covering varnish layer is usually possible.

For wood and metal can be worked with heat or heat. It must first be checked, which heat resistance the material brings. Limited compatibilities have:

  • aluminum
  • Non-ferrous metals
  • soft woods

In the case of heat-resistant steel or hardwood, surface heating may be tried out with a blowtorch, welding torch or similar "flame thrower". In doing so, you must always pay attention to the latent risk of fire and damage to the ground.

Grinding and scratching

Mechanical removal may involve sanding and troweling. For heat-sensitive substrates, even a slight and careful heating, for example with a conventional hair dryer, can make filling easier.

Depending on the condition of the old paint, wire brushes, pot sponges, scrapers or chisels can be used to remove synthetic resin paint as an aid. When using grinding machines, attention must again be paid to the development of heat in order to avoid damage to the carrier material.

Dissolve with stain

Chemically, the synthetic resin lacquer can be applied and dissolved by pickling. It must be applied several times and mechanically scraped off after the respective exposure time together with the dissolved synthetic resin varnish. This removal method is recommended primarily for painted wood.

Depending on the condition of the existing synthetic resin paint, up to five passes, each lasting several hours, may be necessary.

Every method endangers the health

All methods of removing synthetic resin paint have the common cause of the formation of toxic and hazardous dusts and fumes. Basically, the Altlack may only be processed with eye and respiratory protection and protective gloves. Detached paint residues must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Tips & Tricks

Avoid using old synthetic resin paints as often as possible. The better the old layers of paint still hold, the safer they are as carriers of a new layer of paint.
