Fix a table top stable and not disturbing

For the majority of tables, there are two ways to attach the table top, depending on the base. Either there is a direct connection between the legs of the table and the underside of the panel or a support frame forms the base. Special metal brackets, screws and straps are available for the required flat screw connection.

Stability and distances

When mounting a table top, a stable position must be achieved for any unevenly applied contact force on the edges of the plate. While heavy materials such as natural stone or concrete support the fixed position by their own weight, with lighter materials such as wood, the influence of physical leverage must be considered.

Rectangular table shapes are held in the corners by four legs. For other shapes, the support and attachment points must be placed statically thought out. As a rule of thumb, it can be assumed that between all attachment points at most eighty centimeters of free-floating table top surface arises. By reinforcing the table top, for example by diagonal and cross-shaped support strips, this distance can be increased.

Legroom and connection methods

Important when securing the table top is the receipt of the trouble-free use. Frames, table legs and substructures must not take away the legroom of the seated. While desks for a person only limited space is required, dining tables should be possible from all sides have no space restrictions.

Tabletops are usually between two and three inches thick. This limits the screwability. Basically, correspondingly short screws with the help of special tapes and fittings are distributed flat to produce the required durability. Also, gluing in addition or as the only connection can be an option. The disadvantage, however, is the costly disassembly.

Metal fittings and hanger bolts

If the table base has a support frame, metal angles can form the bolting base. Special corner fittings for tables connect the frame parts as and offer screw holes for the table top.

A common type of fastening are so-called hanger bolts, with which table legs can be attached directly. For the hanger bolts, which are usually integrated in the middle of the table legs, metal fittings with screwed-in internal threads are fastened to the underside of the table tops. The metal fittings can be screwed or screwed into wood with claws.

Tips & Tricks

When extending a table top, you should also consider the changed stability and balance properties of the table top when planning.
