Tap water stinks - why can this be?

If the tap water attracts attention by unpleasant odors, action is needed in any case. What can be bad smells, and what can be the cause of it in detail, and how to remedy, is therefore explained here once.

Accurate review

In order to be able to narrow down the problem, it is first of all important to carry out an exact analysis:

  • What exactly does the tap water smell like? (putrid, rotten eggs, metallic...)
  • Where does it smell like? (at all sampling points, only at individual sampling points?)
  • When does it smell? (at certain times of the day or constantly the same, only with warm or cold water?)
  • Does it always smell or does the smell go away when the water runs for a while?

As a first measure you can have a drinking water check done. The type of substances contained in the water can in many cases already provide information about the possible cause.

Smell of rotten eggs

A smell of rotten eggs (= sulfur) can have several causes. On the one hand, there may be gas formation in the area of the pipelines. Here must be researched for the closer cause.

But it can also be an indication of a high occurrence of sulfate-forming bacteria in question. A disinfection of the lines may then be necessary and remedy.

Metallic smell

Metallic odor very often indicates iron oxide in the water. This can be determined by a water test. The cause often lies in the pipes themselves.

Above all, old, galvanized iron pipes lose their zinc coating after a few years and release iron compounds into the water, especially if the water is longer in the pipes.

Foul smell

Decaying organisms in the field of water installation are extremely rare, so the cause is almost impossible.

Foul odors are often caused by swirling of waste water gases and odors, which can pass into the pipes of the fresh water in certain areas. Here, the installation must be checked carefully.

Tips & Tricks

One should make a habit of letting water run for a while before consuming it to release the amount of water that has previously been in the pipes.
