Taps aborted - what to do?

Even with a very slight tilting of the tap, it can break off in the borehole. With luck, the break point is slightly above the hole and can be mechanically "gripped". If the tap is broken below the edge of the hole, it will be difficult.

Mechanical methods

A broken tap that protrudes upwards can be gripped with a precision mechanic pliers. Thus, the drill residue is turned out millimeter by millimeter counter to the thread direction. Important is the cautious approach, since the upwardly projecting tangible drill break point is often chipped and easily torn off.

If the broken tap provides a top volume point, a grain can help. At the thickest material point a small grain point is set. With light hammer blows on the grains or a small pointed chisel, the tap is slowly tapped out.

If the fracture consists of a closed surface, the grinding in of a groove is a possibility. This then serves as a screw slot and the broken tap can be turned out with a screwdriver.

A tap has longitudinal grooves. This is made use of by the special tool, the threaded crown. It can be inserted from above into the borehole with the serrations reaching into the grooves. With light hammer blows the "fitting in" can be supported. After repeated reciprocating, the broken tap loosens and can be turned out.

Drilling and eroding

The broken tap can be drilled out with a smaller drill. He should just reach the inner thread edges. Before drilling, adjust the running direction of the drill against the tap direction.

Metalworking companies can solve broken taps by eroding them in special machines. This procedure is recommended especially for very small taps in high-quality workpieces.

Tips & Tricks

In a stand-boring machine and secure fixation of the workpiece, the risk of tilting is minimal. If possible, you should only use in this way taps.
