Descale Tassimo - a complete guide

The Tassimo now belongs to the German favorite children. In countless variations she has almost conquered households by storm. Like any coffee machine, you also have to decalcify the Tassimo on a regular basis - with hard water in the household a little more often. How descaling works is explained in our guide and our detailed article.

Tassimo models

Tassimo is not the same as Tassimo. In the trade, there are now many different models in many different variations. The most important of these are:

  • Tassimo Caddy
  • Tassimo Vivy
  • Tassimo Suny
  • Tassimo Joy
  • Tassimo Charmy
  • Tassimo Amia
  • Tassimo Fidelia and Fidelia Chrome

For decalcification, this plays only a minor role - the basic rules apply equally to all machines and models - however, there may be some minor differences.

Need for decalcifying

Regular descaling is necessary to keep the pipes and parts of the coffee maker free of limescale. This also ensures their function - calcified devices are no longer functioning properly.

Another source of danger in calcified equipment, which many do not consider, is the so-called lime sump. In the middle of the limescale, dirt and bacteria can settle, which feel well in this protected environment and can multiply well. Later, you will eventually end up in the coffee and make it a highly unhealthy and rather unappetizing broth.

Suitable decalcifying agents

Home remedies for descale

Especially with modern and complicated coffee makers, home remedies are not always the best choice when it comes to decalcifying. Proven home remedies for descale are

  • vinegar
  • Vinegar essence and
  • citric acid

All three are strong to very strong acids that effectively remove lime. Their properties can also be harmful to the components - especially for hoses, electronic parts or plastic parts, as home remedies usually seem quite aggressive. In many cases, the dosage can not be correctly estimated to avoid damage to the machine.

Specially adjusted descaler are therefore always the best way to descale a coffee maker gently - if damage is caused by improper decalcification, no manufacturer takes over a guarantee for the appliance.

Never use citric acid

Citric acid is unsuitable for all Heißentkalkungsprozesse. Upon heating citric acid or dilute citric acid, it combines with the existing lime to form a very hard calcium citrate complex. This chemical compound is very stable and no longer soluble - not even in acids.

If the existing lime converts into calcium citrate complexes, the device is irreparably damaged. The affected parts can only be replaced - which in many cases causes enormous costs and often a repair is already uneconomical.

Suitable decalcifying agents

As a general rule, you should rely on the cleaning staff recommended by the manufacturer when decalcifying. There are special cleaning discs developed for the Tassimo, which are used in combination with the descaling agents. You can also buy these cleaning discs (Service Disc or T-Disc) as an accessory for 5 - 6 EUR.

Descaling tablets are usually available as original "accessories" in the Bosch accessories shop. In addition to the descaling tablets, there are also special cleaning tablets that should be used in addition to cleaning the device. Usually are in both 6 packs.

Descale Tassimo - step by step instructions

  • Tassimo
  • cleaning tablets
  • cleaning disc

1. Remove the water tank and prepare the descaling solution

The descaler solution is 500 ml. Remove the water tank and fill with 500 ml of lukewarm water. Follow the instructions for use of the solution and prepare accordingly. Then put the water tank back in (must click into place).

2. Insert Service T-Disc

Normally, the T disc is located in a compartment on the back of the Tassimo device. From there remove and insert into the coffee machine.

3. Start the descaling program

If the start button of the device is pressed for at least 5 seconds, the cleaning program starts to run. The device is then decalcified. Before doing so, place a sufficiently large collecting container under the spout (at least 500 ml).

4. Wait for the descaling process

As a rule, the decalcification takes about 20 minutes. The end of the process is indicated by the fact that the standby light (orange) lights up. You can now remove the container and empty it.

5. Rinse

Rinse the water tank thoroughly and fill it with fresh, cold water up to the marking line (maximum capacity). Then put the water tank back in and open and close the brewing element. The T disc must be tight. Place the collection container under the spout again.

As soon as you press the Start button, the flushing process starts to run. This process must be performed a total of five times. You must fill the water tank up to the mark every time. Every now and then empty the container and put it back under the spout empty.

6. Remove the disc

After the last rinse, remove the T disc and put it back in the appropriate compartment on the back of the device. The decalcification is now complete.

Tips & Tricks

How often you have to descale your Tassimo depends on your regional water hardness as well as on the usage habits and frequency of use of the machine. As a rule, descaling every 6 to 8 weeks will be sufficient in most cases.
