With a new color to a more modern bathroom

Shades that were still "in" in the sixties and seventies make the bathroom look old now. In contrast to today's bright colors, they can also be combined poorly with different contrast colors.

Anyone who wants to give his tiles a new design, but shrinks from an elaborate bathroom or kitchen modernization, can still make his tiles look more modern. There is no need to re-tile the walls, instead, they are painted over with a special tile varnish in the desired color. This method is especially recommended if the old, unsightly tiles have no damage.

To paint the tiles, no prior knowledge of craftsmanship is required, so that even inexperienced home improvement can realize this project.

The paint application consists of two layers. For both primer and finish coat epoxy paint should be used. They can be mixed by the retailer in any desired color nuance and are characterized by their special durability.

Epoxy lacquers are two-component systems consisting of lacquer and hardener. These are combined and stirred thoroughly, then quickly applied with a roller or brush. In the hardware store, there are also special tile paint sets to buy, in which everything is included, what you need.

Instructions: Painting tiles with tile varnish

Important is the preparation: Even if it seems annoying - thorough cleaning and checking the tiles and joints has a decisive effect on the final result.

Check all tiles for cracks and change them if necessary. Instructions can be found here: Replacing a single tile

Painting floor tiles

In general, it is possible to paint all tiles, but it should be remembered that floor tiles are subject to a special load. Therefore, the note "for wall tiles" or "for vertical tiles" is usually noted. Special 2-component paints are also suitable for floor tiles, which are significantly more durable. However, they should also be used only with reservations. Small errors in preparation can quickly lead to damage.

The tiles are cleaned and degreased with a special cleaner.

1. Check the joints before painting

First, the joints must be checked. Cracks and small holes can be repaired with joint white. If silicone joints are already badly damaged, it is recommended to remove them. With a sharp knife, the mass can be easily cut out and then rubbed off. Also helpful is a special silicone remover. If the fittings are not easy to unscrew, they should be carefully taped.

Thoroughly clean all tiles and remove even the smallest stains.

Important NOTE: Commercially available silicone is not paintable and must therefore be taped or removed. To avoid heels, it is advisable to remove all silicone joints and renew after painting the tiles.

2. Thoroughly clean the tiles

Greasy and soap residues like to settle in the joints. Brush these out.

In the next step clean the tiles. Crucial precondition: The substrate must be clean, dry, free of dust and grease. This can be achieved by a thorough treatment with a soap or vinegar cleaner. There are also special tile cleaners that act specifically against dirt and grease. Also alcohol or even a hydrochloric acid agent (caution, corrosive!) Fulfill this purpose.

Check again carefully: There must be no adhesive residue, for example from old towel hooks, more.

Some tile coatings require roughening of the tile surface before painting. The tiles must be roughened evenly. For this purpose, classic sandpaper or - even better - sanding fleece, which is available from specialist dealers, is suitable. for example, with 240 grit sandpaper. This is especially true for the tile coatings that do without primer. In any case, follow the instructions of the manufacturer!

Mix the 2K primer according to manufacturer's instructions.

3. Prime tiles

Now the real work begins. The primer with the tile primer goes with a fine foam roller even inexperienced easily from the hand. Apply the well mixed components quickly.

Some manufacturers offer 2in1 products, where a first primer is no longer necessary, but starts immediately with the first paint job.

4. First dry phase

After 12 to 24 hours of drying time - observe the manufacturer's instructions - the primer is ready for the first coat of varnish. During the drying period, make sure that the primer does not come into contact with liquids and get wet.

Start with the edges and then roll the surfaces.
Pro tip:
Prepare several of the foam rollers, as they may be attacked by the special preparations and must be replaced.

5. First coat

Mix the tile paint carefully and start applying immediately. For a hard, closed-cell foam roller is suitable. After mixing, the paint can only be processed for approx. 6 hours, after which curing already begins. So be sure to prepare the appropriate amount of paint and not interrupt work with long breaks.

7. Second coat

Apply second coat only after curing of the first coat.

After curing the first coat, the second coat can begin. Re-mix the appropriate amount of tile varnish and apply with a fresh roll.

You will see how well the paint covers even very dark tiles, so that you will receive a brilliant result at the latest after drying this second coating.

Above all, dark tiles sometimes require three coats of varnish so that the old paint does not show through.

8. Curing the tile color

A good and sufficient curing can take up to three days, only then should you continue with the further steps. So be patient before using your new bathroom extensively.

Ökotipp: Allow the brush or roller to dry out after work and dispose of it with the residual waste. So polluting solvents do not even need to be used.

9. Last moves

After curing, the fittings can be reassembled. Now you can color the joints with joint white or another color from the tiles. Subsequently, the silicone joints are renewed at bumps and corners with sanitary silicone and possibly joint tape, for example on washbasin and bathtub.

Consumption of tile varnish and tile primer

11-20 m²about 500 mlabout 3.0 l

The processing instructions for painting over the tiles must always be met with due care for reasons of health protection. If the primer dries overnight, it should also be sanded evenly to give the final finish lasting hold.

This is then applied in the same way. This completes the beautification course. If the new "skin" is not treated with harsh remedies, its "complexion" will remain flawless for years.
