Make tiles yourself

Do-it-yourself work is in vogue. More and more people want to do everything themselves in their own four walls. So it is not surprising that more and more people are interested in the self-production of tiles. However, the self-making of tiles have narrow limits.

More and more areas are conquering the DIY sector

DIY around the house and apartment, that's not just a trend. More and more tools, building materials and application methods are becoming cheaper and easier, so even the savvy do-it-yourselfer can carry out this work. First, it was then special molds made of silicone, concrete oils and release agents, which conquered the home improvement world for its own production of tread plates and grass plates in the outdoor area.

It was therefore foreseeable until questions about the own production of tiles were also heard more and more frequently. Basically, the self-production of tiles for DIY is of course possible. But not in the quality as they reach tile manufacturers. Even in the manufacturing process, the home improvement quickly reaches its limits - not to mention the enormous costs.

The tile production contains the actual problems

For this, however, it is first necessary to know how tiles are made at all. For this purpose, clays, feldspar and quartz are mixed. So far, it would not be a problem. But now the stoneware mixtures are not only kneaded consuming, they are also pressed under enormous pressure. The blanks are then fired for the first time at up to 1,300 degrees Celsius. Now the glaze is applied and the tile must be fired again at these temperatures. From the financial point of view, industrial tiles are thus unreachable. Even if you could borrow a kiln - the energy requirement is huge - energy costs are exorbitantly high.

There are definitely ways to make tiles yourself

However, trade is trying to find solutions. So there is a kind of base tiles to buy. These tiles can then be dyed or painted themselves and then fired at lower temperatures. Alternatively, you can also pour cement tiles yourself. Especially in old buildings such as half-timbered houses, which are to be restored true to the original, this is a frequently used option. However, you should also be aware that cement tiles have disadvantages - not for nothing they are no longer used today. Another option that is open to you is the cooperation with a ceramic manufacturer. Then you could at least make clay tiles that you can glue to the wall.

Start with the production of cement tiles and concrete slabs

In the outdoor area, however, you have good opportunities. So you can acquire silicone molds, concrete oil, release agents and color pigments for cement. This allows you to cast concrete or cement boards in many different colors and patterns self-casting. Maybe it would be a good alternative to try out before making tiles. Because even here, a certain technical standard is necessary. For example, you need an internal vibrator that compresses the cement or concrete mass to a certain extent and expels air from the concrete. But you might as well try on a window sill before you really dare to think about making your own tile.

Tips & Tricks

Indoor wall tiles can under certain circumstances still be made by yourself if you use a ceramic kiln. However, floor tiles are far more difficult because you must consider skid resistance, abrasion resistance and resistance to breakage due to load.

For the outdoor area the own production of tiles becomes even more difficult. Even conventional, industrially produced earthenware tiles absorb more than 20 percent of water and are therefore not frost-proof. The fact that tiles absorb little or no water is mainly achieved by extreme pressing.
