Lay laminate on unusable floorboards

In some cases, situations arise that make refurbishing old planks no longer possible. A destroyed or unsightly board floor then does not necessarily have to be dismantled. Laminate can also be used as a new floorcovering. However, it is important to balance the floorboard and fasten it.

Construction height and insulation

If a floorboard in the original can not be saved as a floor covering, it can be used as a substructure to lay laminate on it. Modern click laminate can be laid loose and fast. In such a reconstruction of the floor must first be checked if the floor can be increased. The thickness of the laminate plus a smoothing layer can be up to several centimeters.

Another aspect is the impact sound development and other noise development such as the creaking of the floorboards. In particular, a floor in the old building must be additionally insulated. When leveling the wooden floor, remove defective, rotten, broken or broken planks.

Liquid compensation

To compensate for floorboards, a liquid mass is recommended, which solidifies after application and ensures a smooth and even surface. In addition, a reinforcement can be applied to the planks to increase stability.

Two ways can be implemented for the insulation of impact sound. Either an insulating material can be applied in sheet form after balancing the floor, as it is done on conventional screed.

As an alternative, the balancing or smoothing mass itself may have an effect as a floor insulation. Special leveling compounds with corresponding sound-absorbing additives fulfill this dual function.

Attachment and waterproof

Extremely important is the thorough fixing of the existing planks. Any protruding nails should be removed and replaced with screws. Old, loose and rusty screws must be fixed or replaced again. When distributing the liquid leveling compound, the joints of the boards should be filled to create a closed substructure.

The dried leveling compound should imperviously enclose the old plank floor so that it can not eventually reach and rotting the floorboards under the laminate, such as condensation.

Tips & Tricks

If possible, you should always first try to work up the plank floor before laying laminate on wooden floor.
