Toaster and asbestos

Anyone familiar with the history of asbestos knows that until the end of the 20th century, it was an extremely popular material in many products in many areas. Therefore, the question arises about the toaster and asbestos - especially with much older toasters.

Asbestos was highly valued - over many decades

Asbestos was something of a miracle fiber, especially in the last century. In fact, the features are outstanding at first glance:

  • no influence of weather conditions
  • extremely heat resistant
  • Easy to process
  • elastic and yet characterized by firmness

Probably the most famous product are the Eternit plates, ie mortar that has been mixed with the asbestos fiber. Here it was the high weather resistance, followed by a solid, yet elastic plate that was available. Also brake pads contained asbestos for many decades because it is extremely heat resistant. There was no segment from the defense industry to the home appliance manufacturers that did not use the carcinogenic fibers.

Why it took so long with the asbestos ban

It was aware of the carcinogenic effect from the middle of the last century. But the lobby behind the extremely dangerous asbestos fiber was just too powerful. Even an asbestos fiber inhaled into the lungs can lead to cancer. At the end of the 20th century, there was a ban in most EU countries. But beware! There are still many countries where there is no ban. Especially in cheap producing developing and emerging countries.

Determine if your toaster contains asbestos

But if it is really about Germany, Switzerland or Austria, the exact prohibition times are crucial. In addition, any transition periods and old inventories must be taken into account. The Federal Environmental Agency has therefore published some figures and information that you can use to orient yourself. Accordingly, you must distinguish between products produced and imported in Germany. Since links always change, we recommend a search in the search engine for "Federal Environment Agency, toaster, asbestos".

Distinguish between "introduced before" and made here

The productive wedding of asbestos ranged from the 1930s to 1993. From 1993, neither asbestos-containing products were allowed to be imported into the FRG nor manufactured. Especially with imported products caution is required. Because there are of course enough products that were introduced before 1993, but later sold.

Ironically, it is mainly high quality equipment that is equipped with a fabric mat to protect against the potentially harmful oxidation products of the filament. More about the structure and functionality of the toaster can be found here. However, the risk is only limited.

Conditional "sleeping" asbestos risk in the old toaster

That depends on how the toaster is used. "Well, for toasting," many readers will think now. But it may be that a toaster is or was repaired. At first not all asbestos mats were used in all toasters, but also micanite. As long as the asbestos mat is not damaged, there is no risk. This is similar to the Eternit plates.

Tips & Tricks

Only sawing, cutting or grinding makes these boards so fire dangerous. If you still own such an old toaster, you should replace it with a new one in use. But do not throw it away. There are collectors who collect old toasters purely as a hobby, so do not use anyway. Maybe you will get a few more euros for your toaster. Or you can collect it yourself if it has an ideological value for you.
