Toilet clogged, what to do?

Pretty much everyone knows the situation: one pushes the rinsing button in the toilet completely unconsciously and suddenly a short gurgle, everything pushes back. Everything that should have disappeared in the drain now floats nicely in the water-filled toilet bowl. Of course, it immediately shoots through the head: toilet clogged - what to do? Because usually it happens at the most impossible time. Either you are not even equipped for a clogged toilet or you can not find the stuff anymore, has very little time or no shops open. Here are some ways you can do what you can do about a clogged toilet with the simplest of tools.

Not every resource is really good

There are numerous home remedies that you can use in a congested locus. But always act with care. Because some tips are effective, but must be performed strictly according to instructions. Likewise, it is just different drain cleaner powders that can dramatically increase the damage, so you need to disassemble the entire toilet. Chemical drain cleaners should therefore always be the last resort.

Chemical drain cleaners always bring a risk

If you have no idea what might have caused the toilet blockage, you should definitely refrain from using chemical drain cleaners from the store. At worst, the powder will concoct the materials that cause the blockage into a solid slurry that can become as hard as cement under the heat (drain cleaner becomes hot when applied).

Aids against clogged toilets

Mechanical aids

Mechanical options are always preferable. Therefore, we have summarized below the most common mechanical aids against a clogged toilet:

  • suction cup
  • drain spiral
  • Plastic bottle (PET for example)
Constipation is usually a combination of different circumstances

But many blockages result from an interaction of different effects. Urine stone or limescale can build up in toilets and severely constrict the pipe cross-section. Often, toilets are also "misused" to dispose of kitchen waste such as old frying oil. But even the commonly used edible fats can lead to a massive fat plug in the sink drain, which forms in the drainage pipe and this clogged. Or the now inserted toilet paper clogs the heavily reduced drain now finally.

Chemical aids

If wastes such as frying fats are now flushed into the toilet regularly, these fat plugs can also be produced here. In this case, you could also resort to remedies that chemically dissolve the toilet clogging. But do not worry, in addition to the risky drain cleaners, there are also efficient home remedies for the chemical solution of a toilet blockage:

  • Vinegar essence or acetic acid (25 to 30 percent)
  • citric acid
  • Hydrochloric acid (up to a maximum of 30 percent)

There would be other aids such as baking soda or baking powder, which can be used in combination with the aforementioned means. However, you will then get a similar risky mix as with some drain cleaning powders. Therefore we do not want to go into detail here.

suction cup

With the suction cup you are pumping to and fro. This creates a suction (negative pressure). If this pressure is strong enough, it can dissolve the blockage.

PET bottles

You need a plastic bottle (for example, a large Cola or soda bottle) with a capacity of at least two liters. In addition, the side walls must be soft and thin. They cut off the soil and slowly bring the bottle down the drain. Then pump as in the pool.

The closure should be screwed on. You can also insert the bottle into the drain, so that it runs full of water (the more, the better). At the lowest point screw the bottle and pull quickly and courageously upwards. This creates a relatively strong pressure that dissolves even stubborn blockages.

drain spiral

The drainpipe is inserted with the claw-like side. On the other hand, you can rotate these claws by turning the handle. The drainpipe helps only if you can reach the position of the blockage with it.

Combination of chemical and mechanical aids

All aids can also be used in combination with the mentioned chemical products. But pay close attention to maintaining the optimum mixing ratios. Too little citric acid infused with hot water (that's the proper course of action) flocks out.

Please note the mixing ratios!

But that does not happen anymore if the mixing ratio to the water is correct. The mixing ratio should be 1:10 (one part citric acid per 10 parts water). In vinegar essence and acetic acid, the ratio is one part of acetic acid or essence to two parts of water. Hydrochloric acid, on the other hand, can be used again 1:10 (25 to 30 percent hydrochloric acid).

Tips & Tricks

If you have nothing at hand, even a big bucket will help. Most of the water flows in a constipation, but only very slowly. When the water has run down, press the toilet flush and fill the remainder to just below the edge of the ceramic. The next time you do, you will know the additional amount of water that can be filled without the toilet overflowing. Then you can, to produce even greater pressure, the flushing operate and at the same time tilt the remaining water from the bucket. This can be a very time consuming method, but it helps in about 95 percent of all cases. Just very, very slowly.
