Build a wooden tool shed yourself

Finished tool sheds are expensive to buy, although they are not designed very expensive. Therefore, it is quite worth considering to build such a tool shed yourself. Below you will find information and tips for self-construction of a wooden tool shed.

DIY is not rocket science

Anyone who thinks it would be particularly difficult to build a tool shed made of wood can reassure us. Of course, it is a demanding task that can also erode many mistakes. Ultimately, however, the effort is comparable to building a terrace roof or a carport. You can even use kits for carports or patio roofs.

Remember connection to the ground

Only the ground connection requires more effort. Because the support beams for a patio roofing are placed on appropriate metal shoes, so they can not rot by contact with the ground. However, a tool shed is closed, that is, the wood extends to the ground and is thus exposed to the risk of premature rotting.

You can do things differently to solve this problem:

  • Metal shoes with elevated foundation for indoor use
  • a masonry pedestal, on which the wooden stand is fastened

There must be no moisture on the wood

In both cases, there is still the risk that moisture rises at the foundation or the wall base. Therefore, both materials (plinth and wood paneling must be separated, for example by tar paper.A higher foundation, however, is less effort, since you need a foundation anyway with a closed tool shed, only that you build it now just higher.

The preparations: anchor the metal shoes

Regardless of the way you proceed, the structure is as follows: take the longitudinal dimensions of the shed and concretes the metal shoes for the uprights into the foundation or masonry. For both variants, the specialist retailer offers metal shoes with corresponding anchorages.

Crossbeam for the stands

If you want to proceed quite simply, metal shoes are also attached to the ends for the crossbeams, into which the crossbeams are inserted and screwed. Subsequently, further uprights and crossbeams are drawn in with less strength. You this as the stand for the planking of wood.

The roof construction

At the top end, the tool shed is still straight, so it forms a rectangle. The simplest is now the construction of a pent roof. If you want to connect to a house, you can also choose a towing roof. At the front, a beam is placed on the cross member in the case of a pent roof;

Requirements depending on the desired roof skin

The water should be able to drain at least at an angle of 5 to 8 degrees, again depending on the selected roofing (roofing felt, sheet metal, bricks, concrete corrugated sheets, etc.). For this purpose, longitudinal beams are placed on the two crossbeams, which are fitted with the chisel. Now, the roof battens, adapted to the desired roof skin (different stability) is placed.

Sealing the planking in the lower area

If you now begin to plan the frame construction with tongue and groove boards, you should cover the bottom two boards with roofing felt on the inside, so that no contact with the foundation or wall base can arise. Now you can completely plank.
