Topping - the process

The topping-out ceremony is a custom that is still in demand today. As a builder, however, you should know about the basic process of a benchmarking. So that you can orientate yourself here you will find in this post all important information.

Topping-out ceremony means the completion of the shell construction

When the shell construction phase is finished, usually topping is held - usually when the roof truss is erected. This is the case in the entire German-speaking area, in many countries there are quite similar customs.

The roots of the Richtfest go back to the Middle Ages and some carpentry - carpentry is still a very tradition-oriented craft today, much of the topping has therefore been unchanged for centuries.

The most important customs should be known as the client. In addition to the straightening tree or Richtkranz are also the topping-out speech, the Richtschmaus and the topping gifts, as well as the hammering of the last nail.

The process in detail

First, a Richtkranz - or a Richtkrone - should be tied or worried. The carpenters then assemble them on the roof.

A very important part is the carpenter's saying or judgment, which is held with a traditional glass of wine, at the end of which the wine glass is thrown from the roof. That should bring good luck and blessings.

The builder then gives a speech in which he thanks the craftsmen and the helpers who helped to build the house. Then comes the very traditional part: the builder and future landlord beats the last nail.

Where it is particularly traditional - in some rural areas, for example - this is made the builder a little heavier, and the last rafter in which the nail is to be taken, is first hidden, and the builder after tough negotiations only handed over, if he supplies enough beer for the artisans.

The Richtschmaus is then the cozy sitting together of all parties after the festivities.

Tips & Tricks

Some modern buildings today have no roof truss - but here is also usually celebrated, namely the "ceiling celebration".
