The transport of an oxygen cylinder must be secured

The transport of an oxygen cylinder is subject to the regulations for dangerous goods. This regulation applies equally to medical and technical oxygen. Only if oxygen cylinders are obviously emptied and empty of fittings, the regulations are eliminated. A special regulation for technical oxygen is the so-called "artisan rule".

Empty and full closed or open bottles

Oxygen is filled into a bottle at a pressure of 200 bar. The condensed content thus has the potential to cause an explosion by sudden escape. As an additional risk, specific properties of the element are added. Oxygen is fire-accelerating and can ignite on contact with fat itself.

If an oxygen cylinder is to be refilled, it will always be transported closed with pressurized residual contents. In the event of final disposal of the oxygen cylinder, complete emptying and disassembly of the valves can lead to uncontrolled transport of metal scrap.

Basic behavior

The general foundations for transport already arise from common sense. The bottles may be transported upright and lying down if the following fuses and precautions are taken:

  • Each bottle must be securely secured against falling over, rolling and moving
  • Careful loading without knocking and dropping is a matter of course
  • A protective cap must be firmly attached to the fitting / valve unit
  • The transport room must be ventilated
  • A fire extinguisher with at least two kilograms of filling must be carried
  • Smoking and open fire are strictly prohibited in and around the means of transport
  • When loading and unloading the vehicle engine must be issued

Dangerous Goods Classification and Craftsman Regulation

Oxygen cylinders are subject to the legal dangerous goods code UN 1072 and have the hazard number 25. Three special regulations additionally classify the bottle types:

  • Oxygen cylinders for emergency use
  • Approved oxygen bottles
  • On ships and in aircraft bottles

Commercial forwarders and hauliers must have the dangerous goods license and know and apply the applicable regulations. A special regulation concerns technical oxygen cylinders with a volume of five kilograms. Of course, the general safety precautions must be adhered to.

A craftsman may pick up the oxygen cylinder directly from the dealer under simplified conditions and transport it to the place of use. Warehousing transports are not included.

Tips & Tricks

Before you transport a cylinder of oxygen as a private person, check with the authorities such as the public order office or the traffic police for the legal requirements. Not in each case a self-transport is excluded.
