Pallet truck: the way it works

When it comes to transporting pallets, pallet trucks are a practical and agile alternative. You can replace a forklift well in many areas. What types of trucks there are, and how trucks work exactly, you will find in our article.

Types of pallet truck

Pallet trucks are available in different versions. The simplest type consists of only two forks for the pallet, which lift the pallet during transport, and a handle for pulling the pallet truck. The lifting of the pallet takes place by means of a hydraulic cylinder, which is operated by a lever on the handle.

Other designs are

  • the scissor lift truck
  • the stacker
  • the pallet truck
  • the electric pallet truck

Scissor Lifts make it possible to handle the load on the pallet at table height. This can be a relief in many areas and help save time in logistics areas. The carrying capacity of such trucks is often in the range of one ton or more.

Pallet trucks can also lift loads higher than required for transport. This makes it easy to place pallets in high-bay warehouses without the need for a forklift. They can be operated either electrically or manually. Again, loads up to one ton are easy to handle.

Pallet trucks allow the simultaneous transport and weighing of loads. This is done by electronically working load cells, which display the weight of the load very precisely and also transmit it via WLAN modules if required.

Electrically operated pallet truck

All types of lift trucks are available in manual version. The lifting of the load takes place with very little effort through a hydraulic pump. In addition, however, electrical auxiliary drives are used.

Electric pallet trucks support human power when pulled by a built-in traction motor - allowing pallets to move effortlessly, even when heavy. It only needs to be controlled, for the movement of the pallet and also for the operation of the hydraulic pump, no power is required.

Difference to the forklift

In order for the forklift to lift a load, it needs a counterweight. This makes forklifts bulky and heavy and usually requires a separate drive that also drives the truck.

The pallet truck does not require a counterweight, which makes the devices much smaller, lighter and more agile.

Tips & Tricks

The load diagram on the pallet truck is always important: it specifies which loads must be lifted to which height so as not to endanger the stability.
