More and more greenhouses made of double-skin sheets

Greenhouses made of double-skin sheets are increasingly supplanting the classic greenhouses made of glass. Foremost for many in a decision in favor of double-skin sheets is above all the price. But those who are willing to spend a little more and select their greenhouse material will not only enjoy it for a very long time. The plants will also thank it for their growth and abundance of fruit.

Materials for greenhouses

Therefore, you first have to know the basic characteristics of the materials that are suitable for a greenhouse. The following materials are available:

  • Glass
  • Polycarbonate twin-wall sheets
  • Double-wall sheets made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA or better known as acrylic glass)

The properties of glass

In order to understand why the plastic plates bring a clear advantage over glass not only in price, it is important to know the properties of glass. First of all, you can distinguish single glass and insulating glass. The glass itself can be divided into the following types of glass:

  • blank glass
  • clear glass

(FROSTED GLASS)

Actually, these terms are a bit confusing, because ultimately it is the blank glass, which is completely clear. On the other hand, clear glass is structured on one side so that the light is broken differently. This is to ensure that the light is scattered better. For a long time one assumed that otherwise in a greenhouse the plants would rather burn with the use of blank glass.

Translucence of glass

Today, there are more and more studies showing that this has absolutely no significant impact. But there are other properties that have all the more influence. First of all, there is the positive aspect that the light transmittance of glass is between 88 and 98 percent. The exact degree also depends on whether double insulated or simple window glass. However, this only applies to long-wave light and not to ultraviolet radiation (UV light).

The biggest problem: Glass reflects UV light

While UV light is harmful and harmful to health, it requires plants over and over again. For example, for certain growth paths or for ripening fruits. Surely you still know the taste of Dutch greenhouse tomatoes, as they became more and more popular in the 1980s and 90s and even today are still offered. These tomatoes taste so empty and bland because they simply lack the UV light under the real glass roof.

Double wall sheets made of polycarbonate or PMMA versus glass

This is different again with double-skin sheets. First, however, the light transmittance must be considered here. For PMMA (acrylic) it is around 85 to 86 percent (for 16 mm plates). For polycarbonate panels, however, only 77 percent. In addition, acrylic double-wall sheets can be made to let UV light through or not. However, UV light transmission is lost at the expense of impact resistance.

Pros and cons Acrylic versus polycarbonate

In other words, UV-permeable acrylic is more brittle and therefore more likely to break. Here polycarbonate plays its biggest advantage. Even where largely hail-resistant acrylic large hailstones also has nothing to oppose, polycarbonate can withstand a long time. It is much more elastic and impact resistant than acrylic. But, as already mentioned, hardly any UV light permeable.

Requirements that must be created for the plants

There are also important aspects to consider in relation to the claims of the plants. In principle, plants need the following conditions for optimal growth:

  • the optimum temperature, ie heat
  • normal, long-wave light
  • UV light
  • a certain humidity
  • if necessary in winter a frost-proof place

Insulating double-skin sheets - the thicker, the better

These properties are achieved by not using single plates for a greenhouse but double-walled plates. The thicker the panels are (they are available between 4 and 16 mm thick), the better the thermal insulation. With the right profiles for double-skin sheets, you can optimally seal the entire surface, which means you can always precisely regulate humidity and temperature.

The construction with glass is also much more complex

Greenhouses made of insulating glass add another problem. Not only that insulating glass is extremely expensive due to the filling with inert gas and the resulting assembly. In addition, insulating glass windows are also relatively heavy. The frame scaffolding made of metal profiles must then be correspondingly stable and massive - which, in addition to the high assembly costs, means additional costs.

The perfect greenhouse consists of acrylic double-skin sheets

Ultimately, the perfect choice for a greenhouse is acrylic glass when you rely on UV light, as with most plants. Polycarbonate should only be considered if the region is extremely susceptible to hail or if branches and fruits can fall down. In addition, you should definitely go to a manufacturer that offers well-established branded products (for example, Makrolon for polycarbonate or Plexiglas for acrylic glass).

Especially at the greenhouse necessarily brand goods prefer

Not only do these branded products offer a very long 10-year warranty, the individual double-skin sheet products can also be tailored to the needs (UV-permeable, more or less impact-resistant etc.). Double-skin sheets with integrated heat protection are not suitable. The heat protection takes place at the expense of light transmission, which is why it is well below 50 percent for these products.

Tips & Tricks

Another important factor in the purchase decision is the cleaning of double-skin sheets. There are brand name products sealed with protection against pollution. The rain then washes off dirt completely unproblematically. You can also seal your greenhouse made of double-skin sheets accordingly later.
