Various methods of sealing marble

For the sealing of marble, there are several different methods. The special feature of the seal is compared to other materials in the preservation of natural stone typical "breathing". Therefore, when sealing marble, the surface is usually cured without completely closing it.

Crystallization, fluating and acrylic

A common type of sealing is the crystallization of the marble surface. In the mixed chemical-physical process, the upper limestone crystals are changed in their nature. The porosity is retained, but the hardness increases. In addition, the tightness increases, which makes it easier for infiltration and settling due to penetrating dirt and liquids.

In fluorination sealing, waxes are used which form a polishable surface coating. The layer repels moisture and water and reduces the settling of dirt particles. Alternatively, there are types of seal that coat the marble with a closed protective layer of, for example, acrylic varnish. The occlusive sealing can be done by laymen, but is also controversial.

Seal marble yourself

  • Stone sealant
  • Polishing or hardening fluid
  • Einscheibenpoliermaschine
  • Hand polishing machine
  • Abrasives such as lambskin covers
  • Soft steel wool

1. Pre-clean

Before sealing, the marble should be removed from any contamination as best as possible. Most manufacturers of sealants offer suitable cleaning products. The use of products from the same house is recommended in order to exclude any interference from interactions.

2. Mix the sealer

The product range of sealants is large. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing the media. There are pure substances to be used and waterproofing products to be diluted with water. Also pay attention to the suitability for your marble type.

3. Seal surfaces

Test the effect of the sealant application on an unobtrusive spot on your marble. Wait 24 hours before sealing to exclude any effects on your marble surface. If you find no findings, you can then use the single-disc polishing machine to apply the sealer to your marble like a conventional polish.

4. Seal corners and edges

Try to continue sealing at the corners and edges using the same type of incorporation. Imitate thereby the rotation speed and duration of the processing with the area machine.

5. polishing

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for rest time and repolishing the seal. During the rest period, which should not be less than 24 hours, make sure that the marble remains unattended or untouched.

With the natural stone care and condition experienced cleaners can perform the fluating themselves. However, it can be difficult to find the necessary machines to lend. The combined use of polishing function and soft steel wool in this process requires a lot of experience.

Tips & Tricks

Do not confuse the sealing of marble with the impregnation. The procedures are similar and some manufacturers do not separate both conceptually. In general, independent professionals such as stonemasons believe that proper care replaces any seal.
