Sichtrich is becoming increasingly popular. This has its reasons in the high durability, the practically barely existing wear over decades and the individual optics. How Sichtstrich affects the living environment is explained in this article.

Cold floor covering

No feeling of pedaling

In homes without underfloor heating, screed is virtually always cold, even when the room temperature is comfortable.

By placing carpets in critical areas where you like warm feet, this can be compensated, but also destroys the look of discreet, as a contiguous surface optically acting floor coverings.

Slipping hazard possible

In addition, Sichtestrich, especially if it is ground very smooth, particularly slippery, if not paid attention to a slip-resistant coating.

Despite the coating, the risk of slipping - especially when wet - can never be completely eliminated. Smooth grinding is crucial for the appearance of the screed floor or exposed concrete floor. But just because then the danger of slipping arises.

Optical cold

Due to its matt or high-gloss surface and the visible concrete structure, Sichtestrich also looks visually cold. It does not give rooms a homely visual warmth. This effect should be considered when deciding on a design with a visual screed.


Most exposed concrete floors are made with special mortars. These mortars have a precisely calculated recipe, by weighing in certain components, the subsequent structure and color can be determined in advance in advance.

As with all cement-based mortars, there is a potential for harmful outgassing in the room air. That comes through different substances.


Even cement itself is considered fundamentally questionable building material, at least that's what experts see it.


Additives can be problematic, as with any screed. They can release harmful substances into the room air.

Additives are used to modify the properties of the cement mortar, such as the flow properties, the processing time or the setting behavior.

Among other things, used as additives:

  • lignin sulfonate
  • pyrophosphate
  • phosphonic
  • polycarboxylatether
  • naphthalene sulfonate


The staining of the visual screed can also be done using potentially harmful substances. There are virtually no restrictions on the use of such substances, since visual screed as such is not covered by the applicable standards.


Particularly problematic are resin-based coatings or impregnations for exposed concrete. Here, a large amount of solvents on the one hand, on the other hand, from harmful compounds evaporate. Some of these hazardous substances are already volatile at room temperature, ie they are released into the room air.

Proper processing

However, with proper processing and replacement of a synthetic resin coating with other options (waxing, oiling), the risk can be minimized. The exposed concrete screed can then really play its many advantages without endangering the health.
