A wall breakthrough

A house is designed and built analogously to the budget and / or the ideas of the client. This results in the discrepancy that the entire floor plan does not have to be permanently adapted to the ideas and requirements of the residents. Then possibly a wall breakthrough is necessary. The demands on a house change over time

In a subsequently purchased house, the floor plan for the residents usually does not match their requirements. But even if builders and residents remain the same people, that does not mean that the house is optimally built. Either compromises had to be made at the beginning of planning, life's practice in the home reveals a different need or the entire life situation has simply changed.

Prepare a wall breakthrough

Then come the change requests in the floor plan. Either a wall opening is needed to enlarge a living space or living area, or a door should be placed elsewhere. The differences already start here, although the process remains basically similar:

  • Check the statics

  • Adapt electrics and plumbing installations
  • Order a debris container
  • Prepare premises
  • Make wall breakthrough

Check the statics

A load-bearing wall must not be demolished, since it also helps to dissipate the weight of the building. A first clue here can provide the roof (but not exclusively!). A rafter roof derives the weight on the outside over the knee stick, while the Pfettendachstuhl within the plan stand are available, which derive the weight on underlying underlying walls.

It is important to distinguish between a breakthrough for a door (or a window), because when you break off the entire wall, work on a load-bearing wall is completely ruled out. In the case of a door opening, on the other hand, a fall can compensate the wall opening up to a certain width. For this, however, a structural engineer or an architect must be consulted.

The advance planning

Now that the static questions have been resolved, a schedule must be created. The building rubbish container must be ordered "in time", the material to cover and all necessary tools must be present. In addition, it must be clarified how electrical and sanitary installations are handled. It becomes problematic if one of the installations on the relevant wall is only continued to other parts of the building.

But if it ends installation on the relevant wall, the electrical system can be disconnected, while water pipes are provided with blind plugs. It must therefore also be present for redirecting or separating the installations, the right material. In the case of a door breach, the required lintel must be present in advance in order to use it immediately after opening the wall can.

Adapt electrics and water installation

This is now largely the first practical step, unless it occurs at the same time as the wall breakthrough.

Last preparation work

Then the rubbish container is ordered and all premises are to be covered. Keep in mind that the dust from construction debris will really penetrate into the last crevice if you do not take countermeasures. After years you will still have to deal with the dust.

Break the wall

Now you can start with the actual wall breakthrough. To do this, first use a miter or a hammer with a chisel to remove the plaster on a relatively large piece. The purpose behind it is to see the joints (mortar, glue) between the stones and to knock out the first stones at these weak points. After that, you can lay down flat with the sledgehammer and the rest of the wall can be broken off relatively easily.

Other ways to stop

If the wall is made of a soft stone such as aerated concrete (gas concrete), the use of a stone saw or milling machine should be considered.
