Glue wall panels directly onto the wall

When asked how wall panels are mounted, the question arises again and again whether a substructure is required. In addition to the personal taste and craftsmanship, structural requirements are also to be considered. Not always there is a choice. Additional design details are also included.

Structural requirements

Wall panels are either ceiling-high as paneling or mounted halfway up as extended "pedestals". If the wall surfaces bring the appropriate texture, the elements can be glued or screwed directly to the wall. The following conditions must be met:

  • The wall must be absolutely smooth and even
  • Drill holes as fixtures require a durable concrete or stone type
  • The suction behavior of the wall must be even when gluing
  • Moisture and large temperature differences must not occur on and in the wall
  • Self-built panels must be torsion-free and dimensionally stable

Tiles and wallpaper as a background

Full-surface bonding is well possible on tiled walls. Assuming the right adhesive, wall panels can be glued to tiles without the need for major preparatory work.

If wall panels are glued to wallpaper, the wallpaper must be judged as the weakest structural element. The heavier the wall panels are, the more accurately wallpapers must be checked and, if necessary, removed. A generous Einkleistern the wall can increase the capacity of old wallpaper or wallpaper leftovers.

Respiratory and diffusibility

Naked walls made of concrete or stone should definitely be primed to create a uniform suction behavior. When wall panels are glued on, materials and diffusion capabilities also play a role. Plastic panels or panels made from fiber and multipurpose panels (OSB, MDF) can cause the wall behind to sweat.

Wood panels breathe, but they need "breathing holes". A full-surface bond with a sealingly drying adhesive prevents diffusion. Point gluing or screwing allows to reduce the risk of moisture development.

Secondary decision aspects

Some conditions and needs must be carefully considered. Unlike with a substructure design, the following factors must be considered:

  • Cable guides and channels
  • sockets
  • light switch
  • Maintenance and renovation

Tips & Tricks

If you install wall panels in a rental property, rather choose a screwed substructure. When later removing full-surface bonded panels are often rock and plaster outbreaks possible.
