Move a wall

The demands on one's own four walls change. Reason enough to tear out walls and move them in again elsewhere - in short: moving a wall is one of the classic tasks in existing buildings. How to proceed and what to consider when moving a wall, you can learn the following.

Not always is the building floor plan optimal

Maybe a house was once planned for a family with many children who are now growing up and moving out in turn. Or you have acquired an existing building, where the floor plan of all rooms does not match your ideas.

These are the classic reasons to remove a wall in a house. At the same time, however, walls or a wall should often be reclaimed elsewhere. In principle, the task "offset wall" is at least two-part:

  • the ripping out of the old wall
  • installing a new wall

Successions are mainly concerned with the preparatory work and the tearing out of the old wall. Setting a new wall requires separate instructions. Depending on which material you use (masonry wall or drywall), you can wall the new interior wall or learn how to build a drywall.

The pre-planning before the actual displacement of the wall

The statics of wall and building

First of all, you have to decide whether the old wall is also a drywall or a masonry wall. For masonry walls, you also need to distinguish non-load-bearing and load-bearing walls. At least you will need a structural analysis.

Better to hire a structural engineer or architect who can take over all the planning. Because if necessary, it is a load-bearing wall, which should be removed or moved. In principle, this is possible. But then under certain conditions, which are mandatory. So it may be necessary to incorporate a suitable fall.

Installations in the wall

Most of the walls have at least electrical installations. These can also come water pipes and drain pipes. Here it must again be differentiated whether the installations are continued through this wall and supply other areas of the building, or whether these installations end here.

Accordingly, when converting the wall, the electrical and water installation may need to be implemented. That too is one reason why you should consult an architect. In addition, electrical installations must be carried out by a suitably certified specialist company.

The ripping out of the old wall

Once all pre-planning has been completed, the rubble container can be ordered, you can start demolishing the old wall. You can read about how to proceed concretely when removing the wall.

Tips & Tricks

Moving a wall means you want to rebuild it elsewhere. If this happens, for example, in dry construction, many other aspects must be considered. For example, if you do not know the consequences, you can not put a drywall on screed easily. But of course, factors such as sound insulation and thermal insulation must also be taken into account in a bricked interior wall.
