Washing machine without water - is that it?

Wash clothes without water? How should this work? In fact, there are already some devices that can do that. This contribution reveals the benefits of washing clothes without water, how well it actually works today, and what inventions the future may still hold in store.

Ecological benefits of washing machines without water

In the Western world, drinking water consumption is between about 100 and 400 liters per person per day. These quantities heavily pollute our drinking water resources.

Up to 45 percent of this amount goes to the laundry and the toilet flush in the drain. A washing machine without precious drinking water would thus make a significant and effective contribution to the conservation of our drinking water resources.

Many of these new technologies can also be used without surfactants and detergents, which can make a further important contribution to environmental protection, since surfactants are extremely problematic for the environment in every way.

Washing machine with ozone from Sanyo

Already in 2006, the electronics manufacturer presented a washing machine that washes ozone instead of water. Ozone is a special form of oxygen.

Ordinary oxygen gas occurs as O2 in the atmosphere, while ozone has the chemical formula O3. It is particularly active oxygen, which is also used for cleaning and disinfecting water in municipal water treatment.

The washing machine-dryer combo presented by Sanyo has virtually no water supply. The laundry is cleaned of bacteria and dirt using ozone, while the water used to rinse the laundry is recycled and reused. The cleaning performance of the washing machine is quite comparable due to various existing programs with conventional washing machines.

The approximately 2,000 USD expensive device could not prevail in the US so far in the market, however.

Washing with dry ice

The manufacturer LG works according to own data at present to a washing machine, which is to wash with dry ice. Frozen carbon dioxide should be used to clean the laundry, it can also be recycled, and does not need to be refilled.

Also on board are technologies such as superconductors, a drum suspended in a ring and some electronic controls. Market ready but these devices are only about 2050, much works on the study currently only theoretically. Nevertheless an interesting way.

Tips & Tricks

A good alternative is already today the use of rainwater or processed gray water for washing machine and toilet flushing. Such service water plants also pay off very quickly financially by saving on water costs.
