Build a water-bearing fountain trough yourself

The well trough is the above-ground structure of a well, which can fulfill different tasks depending on the type of well. In most cases, it is designed as a closed-down component. For multi-storey fountains, it serves both as a continuous and as a catch basin. For rotary pumps, it represents the ideal base.

With or without "inner life"

Anyone who works on ideas for designing a well automatically considers the construction of a well trough. A closed trough can serve as a permanent or temporary water reservoir. He likes to be used as a splash guard or substructure for a rotary pump or for a Schlagbrunnenaufbau. Often the well trough serves mainly optical aspects.

The classic among the fountain troughs is the masonry fountain. Depending on the type of construction, the self-made well trough can simultaneously be the water-holding component or represent a well casing. The well trough surrounds an embedded plastic container such as a mason trough, a baby bath or a washbowl.

Concrete trough

If you want to build a well yourself, you can build or fortify a water-bearing well trough made of concrete. In both variants, of course, impermeability and durability are crucial. For smaller well troughs with maximum side dimensions or maximum diameters of one meter, strong molds or plastic containers suitable for use as trough embedding are suitable as casting molds.

The concrete must be enriched in addition to the basic components of water, cement and sand with stabilizing against water additions. Typical materials are peat and perlite. For a kind of fine reinforcement Fiber or close-meshed wire mesh is used. Color particles produce the desired color of the well trough.

Burning concrete, slurry and foam

Very important during the setting process of the concrete is the constant cooling by cold water. Concrete evolves heat during setting, which widens the pores in the concrete. This process, called "burning" by experts, leads to a porosity of the concrete, which does not develop enough tightness to be able to hold the water in the well trough later.

For corners and possible connections of individual concrete components, the same sealing methods are used as for masonry troughs. With so-called sealing slurries, which are available in the building trade, the well is slurried. Alternatively, a special well foam can be used. It is injected from cartridges, similar to silicone, into the joints, corners or other connecting burrs.

Brickwork trough made of natural stone

Depending on the instructions, lava chippings, gravel or pressed coconut fibers are also used as aggregates for the concrete or joint mortar. Who wants to build a well trough made of natural stones, can use almost all rocks. It is advisable to impregnate or seal the water-retaining inner surfaces to prevent permanent infiltration of the water into the stone and rinsing out of the well trough from the inside out.

Tips & Tricks

For a masonry look, you should preferably prefers the blending of a concrete inner tub, as you achieve in this way a much longer life of your self-built well trough.
