Water purification - is it necessary and what options are available at home?

Tap water versus bottled water

The approximately 10 billion liters of bottled water consumed in Germany actually have a catastrophic eco-balance. The transport routes to the shops, from the shop to the customer and the transport of empties result in an enormous CO2 burden.

Added to this are the chemicals needed to clean and reprocess the bottles and the energy used for them. Not all beverage bottles come as empties recyclable back, so it must also be continuously re-produced.

With tap water, this environmental impact is completely eliminated. A waiver of the purchase of bottled water and drinking tap water is therefore highly recommended for environmental reasons.

Need for water purification

Due to the high quality of the drinking water in Germany, there is no absolute necessity to clean or boil tap water. It contains minute amounts of impurities, which in any case are harmless to health. This is ensured by the strict and very conservative limits in the Drinking Water Ordinance.

In the trade a variety of devices for water purification for the household is offered. With the suggested necessity that tap water must be cleaned before drinking, a lot of money is earned.

Water filters contain in most cases an activated carbon element that can filter out heavy metals, dissolved in water, uncharged substances and suspended solids and suspended matter. But it works only as long as the filter element is not completely added. After that, it must necessarily be replaced.

With water filters, there is also the risk of bacterial contamination of the filter and thus a sudden, very high bacterial load in the drinking water.

Reverse Osmosis System

A reverse osmosis system produces very pure water, almost the purity of distilled water. However, the natural mineralization of the water is removed, which is not safe for health. The drinking of distilled water, osmosis water and deionized water can not be recommended from a health point of view.

In addition, these systems consume a lot of power and waste up to 10 liters of drinking water to produce one liter of purified water. That also drives up the cost of water.

In principle, UV disinfection of drinking water only makes sense in water that is actually heavily contaminated. As a precaution, it is superfluous in most cases, except the house installation already has a serious contamination on. But it does not lead to adverse chemical changes on the water, it makes the tap water only sterile.

A water test in a certified laboratory can provide information about the actual stresses present in your own tap water - and often shows that it is not necessary to clean the water at all.
