And "calcification" in arteries, coronary vessels and in the brain is not caused by lime, but by other substances. Only the appearance resembles a calcified water pipe, that's why the term has been coined.

Types of descaling systems

For private use, only ion exchanger systems are suitable. They consist of an exchange resin, which is charged via a NaCl solution with sodium ions.

If lime-containing water flows past, the calcium and magnesium ions are held in the exchange resin and the stored sodium is released into the water.

If all sodium is consumed in the exchange resin, it must be regenerated by a NaCl solution. As a result, the filtered-out calcium and magnesium ions are simultaneously rinsed out of the exchange resin and discharged into the wastewater. Such descalers are also permanently installed in every dishwasher.

Dual-chamber systems work in parallel - one tank is regenerated, while the other provides lime-free water. For private households this is recommended.

"Magic devices" for the physical decalcification of the water, which are to work with magnets or electricity, work on the basis of a mere theory. They bring no measurable performance. As long as they do not have a DVGW approval mark, they should not actually be installed or grown.

Tips & Tricks

Particularly affected by high water hardness are boilers, washing machines and coffee machines and water heaters - so only devices in which water is heated. For the washing machine alone, a decalcification system is not worthwhile. It can also be operated with rainwater, and each detergent contains a large amount of chemical-based water softeners.
