Are water softening systems useful?

Possible problems with too hard water

If the total hardness of the tap water is too high, this can cause problems.

Washing machines can calcify, especially in the area of ​​the heating elements. This can shorten the life of the washing machine very sustainably.

The use of a special detergent can also help quite effectively to protect washing machines. The well-known detergent Calgon contains synthetic Zeolythe, which like an ion exchanger and lower the water hardness. As a result, the heating elements of the washing machine are protected against limescale deposits.

Another argument for use is the significantly lower detergent consumption with softer water. Softening water also helps the environment because less surfactants enter the sewage.

Hard water also leads to the rapid calcification of coffee makers and kettles. They often have to be decalcified and suffer from the deposits.

Health effects of too hard water

Too much water may cause skin irritation on sensitive skin. But this is rarely the case and usually only slightly pronounced. Corresponding laundry additives can also prevent this effect.

Tap water with a high calcium content can be safely consumed. There are no health risks to be feared here.

Health concerns are therefore no argument for the purchase of a water softening system.

Meaningful use

It makes sense to use water softening systems only if the water hardness is around 14° dH. Among them, their use makes no sense.

Whether a locally installed water softener - for example, in front of the washing machine or a central water softening system is installed, must be weighed in individual cases.

An argument for the use of a central system may well be that the water pipes do not clog up so quickly and that scale is safely avoided.

Softer water is also important for tea and coffee: the lower the hardness of the water, the more alkaline it works. As a result, acidic ingredients are slightly softened, and the aroma can prevail better.
