The weevil is one of the worst pests that can catch a garden. He is between 1.3 and 20 mm in size and easy to recognize by its trunk, which is used for tapping plants. There are about 60,000 species, of which just under 1000 occur in Germany. To the chagrin of the plant world, this beetle family is the most species-rich: every sixth beetle is a weevil. The best known is the weevil, There are specialized species for almost all plants, only two are not affected: orchids and cardiac plants. Why this is so, is not known.

Ward off weevils

Weevils infest almost every garden plant, but rhododendrons, cherry laurels, yews, primroses and ferns are particularly popular. During the day, the beetles rest well camouflaged on the ground, only in the evening they are active and leave small round chewing marks on the leaf margins. Characteristic of a beetle infestation is the fact that never holes in the leaf surfaces arise.

In a lock method, simple boards or darkened objects placed next to the plants help. Place near affected plants z. B. wider wooden boards, under which the beetles like to hide. During the day, this "trap" is controlled and the sleeping beetle is collected and destroyed. Of course not all beetles are caught with this method, but a first step in the right direction - without chemistry - is done.

Fight weevil larvae

Even more voracious than the beetles themselves are their larvae. Female weevils lay up to 1,000 eggs in the soil, from which the larvae hatch in late summer. The big problem: They live underground and eat here unnoticed the roots and rhizomes of bushes and shrubs. Often they are only discovered when it is already too late and the plant is too weakened and can no longer be saved.

It is recommended to tackle the root of the problem and to combat the larvae of the beetles in spring and autumn. The drug of choice is their worst predator, the nematode, The so-called nematodes are offered in clay granules, which is distributed over the affected soil as a pouring water additive. In the evening, give the treated water over affected areas as the worms die in the sunlight. In addition, the soil temperature should be at least 12° C, as the tiny roundworms are inactive at low temperatures. Once all the larvae have eaten, the nematodes lack their food and they go in, so that the soil climate normalizes again.

Tip: Since weevils like to approach known plants, you should check your garden regularly after an infestation.

Wanted poster: Weevils

Description: Small white larvae in the root area, 1.3 - 20 mm large beetles on leaves and stems

Food Source: Almost all plant species

symptoms: Larval infestation: Hanging and drying leaves, despite sufficiently moist soil; Beetle infestation: Roundish food marks on the leaf margins

Prevention: Difficult. It is said that weevils prefer loose, dry soil when laying eggs; Sufficient and regular watering can help.

fighting: Collect beetles, nematodes against the larvae and pour water
