The weight of round and hexagonal rebar


Of crucial importance is the weight of structural steel, which must be as low as possible while providing the greatest possible stability and durability. The usual cross sections are round or hexagonal, with round steel rods and steel wires with the same diameter have a lower weight.

Calculation basis

The weight of reinforcing steel depends on the density of the steel grade, which, however, plays a minor role in the small diameters. The engineering steel used in the standard has the necessary properties to prevent corrosion in the concrete.

The construction calculation uses fixed weight values ​​per meter of reinforcing steel. With round steel, three points behind the decimal point are calculated up to a diameter of nine millimeters; in addition, two points are sufficient for a precise calculation.

In hexagonal structural steel is generally calculated with two digits behind the comma, the minimum diameter is five millimeters. Flat and square steel is not used as a structural steel to reinforce concrete because the weights are higher in relation to the diameter.
