What costs more: a ton or a cubic meter of sand?

The manufacturers and dealers offer their sand in units of weight or in volume. Anyone who buys per ton must consider the density of the sand and the dryness factor. When purchasing per cubic meter, the specific weight of the cargo must be calculated for the transport.

Volume, weight and variables

Who needs sand, has in most cases the need for filling a defined space measure. This also applies to the extensive covering of a floor with sand, for which some providers quote a price per square meter. The price in this case refers to a specified thickness of the sand layer and also corresponds to a volume measure.

Variables in determining the required amount of sand result from several reasons:

  • Condition of the sand: dry, damp, wet
  • Blend of sand: grain sizes and content rocks
  • Compaction ability: type, pre- and post-processing of the sand

In principle, the specific weight of the sand must be calculated for prices per tonne in order to classify the costs in tonnes.

Reference quantities and density

The denomination of the sand is the indispensable prerequisite for determining the required amount of sand in cubic meters as well as in tons. The higher the density of the sand, the higher the weight of the same volume unit. The density of quartz sand, for example, depends strongly on the quartz content. For other sands, washing is the decisive factor for the density.

That's how much sand costs in cubic meters and tons
1 ton of Dolomite crushed sand (grain size 0-5 mm) as bulk materialabout 55 EUR
1 cubic meter of Dolomite crushed sand (grain size 0-5 mm) in the BigBagabout 120 EUR
1 ton of washed sand (grain size 0-2 mm) as bulk materialabout 21 EUR
1 cubic meter of washed sand (grain size 0-2 mm) as bulk materialabout 19 EUR

How to save

The quoted prices in cubic meters are "closer" to the determined room size and thus a "honest" price. In most cases, sand is offered in tonnes cheaper than in cubic meters. Always calculate the dimensions first and then calculate the weight.

Tips & Tricks

Many providers provide calculation tools on their websites. After you have entered the measurements, you can usually read your needs in volume and weight.
