What is the density of reinforced concrete and what does it depend on?

Bulk density and dry bulk density

With concrete one finds usually only information on the dry bulk density. The dry bulk density indicates the ratio of mass to volume. Contrary to what the name suggests, the dry bulk density of concrete is only determined after curing.

This is due to the fact that concrete changes its density during curing. Fresh concrete has a different density than hardened concrete. During curing, the contained cement forms so-called crystal needles. The concrete "shrinks" during hardening and its volume decreases, the interlocking crystal needles form a denser structure than the fresh concrete has. This changes the density of the concrete.

Cause of the density differences

The reason for the different density of individual types of concrete is due to the different concrete composition.

Depending on the mixing ratio of the individual concrete constituents and which aggregates are used, the dry density of the concrete often changes significantly. Conventional concrete has a dry bulk density of between 2,000 and 2,600 kg / m³, lightweight concrete is lower.

One differentiates thus:

  • Lightweight concrete under 2,000 kg / m³
  • Normal concrete with 2,000 - 2,600 kg / m³ and
  • Heavy concrete with densities of more than 2,600 kg / m³

Density and density differences in reinforced concrete

Reinforced concrete still contains steel as additional material - in the form of steel mats or different reinforcements. He is thus one of the heavy bonkers.

Its density is in most cases around 100 kg / m³ higher than that of the unreinforced concrete type used. However, this value can only be regarded as an approximate value, since the reinforcement of reinforced concrete can be designed differently. Accordingly, deviations then result from the above indicated guideline value.

In some cases, the concrete will be reinforced with stainless steel or other materials instead of ordinary reinforcing steel. This can also change the density. The installation of anchor channels or similar components also changes the density.

Tips & Tricks

The reinforcement must always be matched to the loads acting on the respective component. In the area of ​​joints or wall openings in reinforced concrete walls, the reinforcement must also be made stronger than in other areas. In some cases, the reinforcement can be reinforced by dowel bars or rope loop designs without adding weight.
