What is needed for the self-building of sliding doors

If you want to build sliding doors yourself and create all the components including the guides in your own design, you need a lot of experience in craftsmanship. Sliding door fittings are available as installation kits in the relevant specialist retailers and in hardware stores. You can choose between variants running at the top and bottom.

Sliding, sliding and sliding doors

Mechanically, the upper and lower guides function similarly regardless of the loaded running side. On one side are the guide rollers and the opposite side acts as a guide. Also possible are very comfortable and smooth sliding doors with double-sided guide rollers.

For less frequently used sliding doors such as storage space coverings in sloping ceilings, storage cabinets and storage rooms, for example in the basement, only sliding doors mounted on rails can be sufficient. In particular, as cabinet doors are freely suspended and only top running models used. A minimum dead weight of the door leaf is recommended.

Planning and work steps

1. Mounting with attached guide

Sliding doors can be mounted on a wall with the upper guide attached. For room-high constructions, attach the guide rail to the ceiling. In both variants side stops can be mounted, but do not have to.

2. Frame assembly

You can mount the sliding doors in a complete frame, whereby the side panels can be formed by the reveals in the case of through doors.

3. Bottom roller bearing

If you use rollers running below, you will have to cut out corresponding recesses from the door leaf, both for prefabricated kits and for self-construction. For self-construction, drill the holes with a drill with a wood drill bit or drill bit. The rolls of finished fittings are usually stored in rectangular metal constructions, which you can place in a sawn hole with the jigsaw.

4. Axle connection crucial

Always think of stable castors that are permanently accurate vertical. For this purpose, the axle must be so firmly connected to the wheel body in their own designs that even in the long run no play can occur due to knocking or lapping.

Tips & Tricks

If you install a folding door, the functional principle is similar to that of a sliding door.
