What are there cheeks for?

The stair string is not only the decoration of the stairs, but it also represents a supporting component. Not every staircase has such a cheek, only certain stair types are equipped with it. Especially in historical times were Wangentrappen very popular, the cheeks were mostly lovingly designed with decorative profiles and a beautiful coat of paint.

What are actually stair cheeks?

According to the stair building standard DIN 18065, the stair string is a component that "carries the steps sideways and usually limits the run laterally". So here we see that the cheeks are by no means inconceivable without a suitably constructed staircase.

The stair stringers are often right next to the steps and protrude upwards. However, some cheeks are also below the step edge and thus outside of the zone visible to the staircase user. There are a few more names for this element:

  • wall cheek
  • librigena
  • light cheek
  • or just cheek

As with the human face, cheek-type staircases usually have two cheeks - one on each side. The cheek on the wall is the Wandwange, opposite her is the Freiwange.

What material are stair stringers made of?

Most stair stringers are made of sturdy wood, with deep notches to accommodate the steps. String staircases belong to the large group of saddled stairs.

In modern times, other lanyards and materials have been added to the staircase construction. For example, there are now massive sheet steel cheeks for modern stairs.

Design options for the stair string

A beautifully designed staircase wall decorates the staircase. In historical wooden staircases, the structured cheek profiles are sometimes pasted with thick paint. We recommend to remove the disturbing layers and restore the wood-vision.

A wooden stair string can be wonderfully dyed with beautiful wood stains or covered with a glaze. Colored stair stringers may be decorated with wall stickers or paintings.

If the old decorative profiles are no longer intact, they can usually be removed relatively easily and replaced with new profiles. For this purpose, simple quarter rods but also chic jewelry profiles in the antique look are suitable.

Dress up the stringers

Like the entire staircase, stair stringers can be covered with a new material. Opt for noble solid wood, beautiful tiles or a high-quality laminate: So the old staircase is a chic, new eye-catcher!

A skilled craftsman can even dress his own stairs with laminate, which saves a lot of costs. In the laminate area, the many different decors, from the stone look to the natural wood look, are the main attraction.

Tips & Tricks

Is it squealing at the staircase? Find out exactly where the noise came from and use wooden wedges to set the creaking step. Cut the wedges to fit - and enjoy the silence!
