What to do if a door is dragging

If a door begins to drag over time, the cause can range from simple soiling to a design-related defect. In the search for the cause of the effort should be increased. After cleaning it can be adjusted and the last option is to work the door leaf.

Thorough inspection and cleaning

Naturally, the lower door column is exposed to constant drafts in almost all cases. Even the slightest bumps, damaged areas or jammed dirt particles can cause the door to jam or drag. As a first measure, several cleaning cycles should be tried:

  • Remove any dust and dirt from floor areas underneath the door leaf
  • Use a rigid lancing tool such as a spatula to "scrape" the door gap
  • Clean the door gap with a brush or a toothbrush
  • Disassemble brush seal, coat and rinse

In some cases, sanding may begin after the door has been cleaned. Cleaning water and liquid cleaning agents run down the door leaf and can clump on the lower edge of the door leaf. These residues must be removed, which is often facilitated by rewetting.

Clean and grind lifted door

In order to facilitate the cleaning of the lower door gap and to avoid the complete unhooking of the door, the door can be raised. In normal pivot hinges there is a game of one to two centimeters, in which the door leaf is still suspended. The underlay of two support wedges can fix the raised door.

With the door raised, a visual inspection of the lower edge of the door leaf can be carried out. Thus, chippings or other resulting bumps that act as "mud flaps" or even cause the grinding, discovered.

Depending on the door material, these bumps can be sanded with a file without having to completely unhook the door. If larger bumps have formed or the door is warped, the door leaf must be unhooked and ground and shortened by removing more material.

Set the door

Simple room doors are usually hung with hinges, which can be adjusted by turning the entire armature. There are adjusting screws on house, terrace and steel doors, which are usually provided with hexagon socket threads. With an Allen key, the door hinges or hinges can be adjusted according to the manufacturer.

Tips & Tricks

Check the relationship between weather and time when the door is sanding. Humid air causes wood to swell; in the case of heat, materials expand and, when it's cold, pull together.
