Remove Window Color without scratching

Window decoration made of window color has to defy many influences. Slices show extreme temperature fluctuations during the seasons. Additional differences in humidity require high adhesion and durability. Accordingly, the removal and removal often requires methodological effort and appropriate tools.

Film layer of dispersion or acrylic

The success of different methods of removing and reconciling Window Color depends primarily on the type of color and its age. Older and cheaper products consist of so-called aqueous copolymer dispersions. Newer and more expensive colors are made of acrylic. Dispersions are more water-soluble than acrylic. Obtaining an image with mechanical removal is more likely with acrylic paints.

The longer a color is present on a pane, the more it has bonded to the glass surface. In the figurative sense can be spoken of a "burn-in" by solar radiation. Chemically and physically, the substances remain separate, but develop an ever finer "border" to each other. When making mechanical adjustments, fractions of a millimeter must serve as separation aids.

Age and condition determine detachability

Windows pictures made of Window Color form an adhesive film on the glass pane after drying. In principle, this film can be detached or removed as a coherent piece. Warmth, cold and wet are aids to preserve the picture in principle. In the case of very long-lasting images, it may not be possible to make it in one piece. The effect is similar to wallpapers, which become less and less durable with time and unfavorable or changing conditions and develop an internal brittleness.

Common methods to remove your Window Color

  • water
  • Vinegar or window cleaner
  • Solvents such as stain remover, nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol or thinner
  • hairdryer
  • Hob scraper
  • cloth
  • Old newspaper

1. temperature conditions

Remove only at minimum outside temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius. You should also avoid days or times of the day with direct and strongly heated sunlight.

2. heating

The younger your Window Color is, the more promising it is to simply peel it off with a hot air dryer. Warm the window image evenly. Take advantage of the highest temperature level of your hair dryer (distance about ten centimeters) and try to distribute the heating as evenly as possible. If you can leave an impression with your fingernail anywhere, the Window Color is ready to be peeled off.

3. Scraping

Attach the hob scraper to one of the two lower corners of the window image. If you do not "get drunk", a short, targeted reheating with the hair dryer can help. Pull the scraper horizontally along the lower edge of the picture. Then work your way up the side of the screen.

4. Remove

If you reach an upper corner of the picture, you release a "dog's ear". Take it like a pull tab between index finger and thumb. Pull up the corner, varying the pull direction between the center of the picture and the top of the picture, depending on the resistance.

5. watering

For older window images, heating may not be enough. Dip old newspaper pages in water and "paste" them onto the Window Color. After about half an hour soaking, you can try to peel off the paint with the scraper. Additional effectiveness may produce heating of the soaked surfaces and renewing dried newspaper pages during the exposure process.

6. Dissolve chemically

While the image can often be "saved" with heat and water, old and stubborn Window Color can only be removed piecemeal. Depending on the type, dispersion or acrylic, choose a suitable solvent. Distribute it uniformly dabbing on the colored surface. If "disintegration" and smudges appear in Window Color, you can remove the paint with a soft cloth or scraper.

7. Avoid scratches

In principle, the avoidance of scratches in the window pane is self-explanatory. Each jammed impact of the scraper creates scratches. Always press the scraper surfaces or blade exactly level on the glass. Angle the scraper as little as possible to "pry" the window color. Try limiting the force on the peel-off by edge tabs.

8. Post-cleaning

Shadowing on the glass pane is common after removing Window Color. With vinegar water or conventional window cleaner you can polish the residue, also consisting of printing ink of the newspaper, from the disc.

Set up work environment

Even if dry Window Color is normally harmless to the touch when in contact with the health, some preventive measures should be followed when removing it. When heated, it is always possible for chemical emissions to occur which, at least by good ventilation, prevent inhalation. Safer is the use of a respirator.

Crumbs and shreds of old detached Window Color are comparable to paint and paint residues. They should be collected and disposed of inaccessible to children and pets. If crumbs get on clothing, they should be removed by brushing.

Tips & Tricks

The most effective and gentle way to remove Window Color is in moderate temperatures with little difference in indoor and outdoor values. Cooling makes removal difficult in principle.
