Set window - instructions

In terms of size, material and design, modern windows are sometimes significantly different. But not with the functions. Typical windows that are widespread in the living area today would be the turn / tilt windows. The mechanism for unscrewing or tilting the windows must be adjusted so that the position in the frame and the contact pressure are correct. With appropriate installation instructions, setting windows is easy for any DIY enthusiast. Therefore, we have prepared an appropriate window setting guide for you.

Construction of a turn / tilt window

In order to set a turn / tilt window correctly, it is first necessary to know the mechanics and the important elements for setting.

  • Rotary handle, on the side of the locking pin (retrieval of the various functions by the respective position)
  • Corner bearing below (opposite the handle side)
  • Scissor bearing above (same side as corner bearing)
  • Locking pin or mushroom pin (safety window), normally handle side, with safety windows several pins on different sides

Settings options on a window

Overall, there are three setscrews on the bearings.

  • diagonal adjustment of the wing
  • parallel raising and lowering of the wing
  • Adjustment of the bearing pressure on the bearing side

There is also an eccentric locking pin, which is removed or brought closer by turning it from the frame.

Set the position of the sash in the window frame

The window sash with the composite window (multiple glazing with surrounding composite frame) must fit exactly at the top, bottom, right and left into the frame. You have two different adjustment options: the diagonal and the parallel adjustment.

parallel adjustment

If the upper and lower distance between frame and sash is not correct, you only need to raise or lower the sash in parallel to set the upper and lower distances. In order to achieve evenly spaced sides of the frame on both sides (or in the case of an inclined window sash), the diagonal adjustment screws are actuated.

Diagonal adjustment

With it you raise and lower the wing diagonally. This has the consequence that the lateral guidance is no longer even at the top and bottom in many cases. Therefore, first make sure that the lateral distances between the wing and frame fit. Then raise or lower the sash in parallel so that it fits evenly in the window frame at the top and bottom again.

Set step by step instructions for the window

  • Machine or lubricating oil
  • different nuts (hexagon, Allen, Torx or multi tooth)
  • associated ratchet box
  • Fork / ring or ring / ring wrench for the eccentric locking pin
  • Screwdriver for removing the veneers
  • possibly manufacturer's description of the various adjusting screws on the window

1. Preparatory work

First, all covers are removed (corner bearing, scissor bearing).

2. Adjust the window sideways

To do this you must turn the screws to diagonal (oblique) lifting. If you turn the wing upwards, the wing will be drawn more towards the bearing side. If you turn the wings downwards, the wing will be pulled more towards the opposite side of the handle.

Left and right, the lateral distance between the sash and the frame must be set the same. Then, as previously stated, the window is set up and down via the parallel setting.

3. Adjust the window above and below (parallel setting)

Using the appropriate adjustment screws, the entire window sash is raised or lowered in parallel. Again, the distances between the sash and frame are the same (top and bottom).

4. Set the contact pressure of the window

On the bearing side, you can increase or decrease the contact pressure with the third adjusting screw. On the handle side you can achieve this by the eccentric rotation of the locking pin. You should always check the pressure after quarter to half revolutions. The window must be able to close completely over the handle by twisting without significant force. At the same time, the contact pressure should be uniformly high.

5. Final work

Now you can oil scissors and corner bearings a little bit more. Then the caps are re-attached.

Tips & Tricks

Also, after installing the window (new windows, swipe out the window, etc.), a window must be set. These are the same adjusting screws.

Established window manufacturers also provide instructions and window descriptions for very old models. Either you can request them directly or download them on the website. For building market windows from a no-name manufacturer you have to try. The mode of operation for adjusting (three adjusting screws per bearing, eccentric locking pin) is always the same.
