Windows can only be built up to a certain width. If a wider window front is required, you must couple several window elements together. For this the specialized trade offers special couplings. However, you must also observe some principles for couplings. In the following, we have provided more information about docking windows.

The construction of the facade with the window opening

To better understand the task of window coupling or façade coupling, take a look at the façade of a building shell. This consists of the following components:

  • Facade (masonry)
  • window opening
  • Cross strut above window and door openings (fall, usually made of reinforced concrete)

From this, it can be deduced that the strut or the fall will later deduce the weight acting from above on the side next to the window (or the door). For physical reasons, of course, the breadth of such strivings are limited. These can not be standardized.

The load width specifies the maximum window width

In old buildings, falls are often still made of low-quality concrete, while for modern buildings crashes are made of high-performance reinforced concrete. In addition to the material of the fall, the final width also depends on the material of the facade and its dimensions. Finally, the fall must divert the forces acting from above on the side of the window. From a certain width of the fall but can no longer be derived to the outside, but would break (load width).

These factors influence the load range

From all these data and dimensions then results in each case the maximum window width. However, the maximum window width is influenced and reduced by other factors:

  • wind loads
  • suction loads
  • pressure loads
  • service loads

From all these values, the structural engineer or architect calculates the maximum window width. For building heights of more than 25 m or a geographical height of at least 800 m above sea level, even a separate proof of the wind loads must be submitted.

Even windows can not be built arbitrarily wide

But even windows themselves must not exceed certain widths (in relation to the window height). It has long been found that the wear of windows is many times higher, when certain widths are exceeded in relation to the window height. Consequently, even windows are limited in their maximum width.

Several windows connect side by side instead of a very wide window

But now there are different requirements for the window openings or window widths. These can be depending on the utility, but also on the architectural style. Then it may happen that builders want or need wider windows than can actually be installed.

There is a simple solution for this: several windows are simply placed side by side. For this, however, couplings must be set between the windows. As can be seen from the different requirements (maximum camber width or maximum window width), different couplings are required.

Statics couplings for windows at maximum camber width

If the maximum simple camber width is reached, statics couplings can be set between two windows. Thus, the maximum camber width can be extended accordingly, since the static couplings also derive the forces acting on the camber.

Connection couplings at maximum window width

Otherwise (if the maximum load width of the camber is not exceeded) to set several windows next to each other, simple connection couplings are required. In particular, you must avoid requirements such as the avoidance of sound or thermal bridges. Of course, the specialized trade also offers a variety of products for this purpose.
