Unhide a window

There are many reasons why a window might need to be hung up once. But even savvy do-it-yourselfers do not have one of the usual turn / tilt windows in their hands every day. Because of the turning and tilting mechanism, many even think that unplugging such a window would be costly. However, a window with tilt and turn function can be hung very quickly. Below we have created a detailed guide for you, so you can hang your window even faster.

Building a window

The commonly used windows in residential buildings are tilt and turn windows. By turning the handle to the appropriate position, you can either tilt or open such a window. For this you need to know the mechanical elements.

  • Journal bearing on the handle side
  • Corner bearing below, opposite the handle side
  • Scissor bearing above, opposite the handle side

Function of the lock

If you set the window to the "open" position, the locking pin is sunk in the frame of the window sash. The most complicated component on the turn and tilt window is the scissor bearing. However, only at first glance.

Scissor and corner bearings

In principle, the scissors bearing is a bearing that is not connected to the window frame like the lower corner bearing. Rather, it is attached to the wing and is fastened on the side opposite the wing on the window frame. So the scissor bearing serves at the same time as a catch strap, so that the window in the position "tilting" can not tilt downwards arbitrarily.

The lower corner bearing follows a simple principle

On the other hand, the lower corner bearing must be thought of as a pin that can move freely in all directions within its radius. The window is pushed over the matching counterpart only in this pin and remains rotatable on the axis.

Fuses on the window sash or the window mounts

There may be a fuse on both bearings (most likely at the top). This can be a locking pin or a locking spring. There are also pins that are secured with a spring. The spring must then be pushed inwards to pull out the pin. There is therefore no general description for releasing the fuse. However, you will find all the necessary information in the manufacturer's documentation of the window.

Step-by-step instructions for unhooking from a window

  • Screwdrivers in different sizes
  • different pliers
  • possibly a work lamp
  • possibly a work manager
  • depending on the size of the window a helper

1. Preparatory work

All bearings are covered with plastic caps or trim. With a screwdriver, they can be removed easily and quickly.

2. Unhook the window

Now close the window and remove the upper locking pin (on the shear bearing). This is pulled out down. If the locking pin can not be pulled out exclusively with a pair of pliers, you can tap the pin lightly from above with a punch.

The locking pin may cause you to find a groove on which the scissor bearing locks. Remember the position. Later, when you install the window, this groove must be returned to the same position.

After removing the locking pin, move the handle to the tilt position. But beware of tilting the window! Regardless of whether wooden, aluminum or plastic windows - the weight deviates significantly from the experience of the window material, since there is mechanics in the interior.

In addition, the weight of a modern double or triple glazing should not be underestimated. Depending on the size of the window, you should only tilt the window if it can hold a helper. Well, after the window is tilted, it is simply raised. You automatically pull it out of the lower corner storage.

3. Further work

The installation of the windows (hanging) is then exactly in reverse order. Keep in mind, though, that it may be necessary to adjust the window.

Tips & Tricks

Pure tilt windows have a catch bar at the top. This is dismantled, then the window (mostly smaller basement windows) can be posted. Older windows can, but need have no backup. In any case, the windows are opened normally and then lifted just like a door leaf up and out of the hinges.Befor you reinstall a window, you should also treat all moving mechanical parts of the window with machine oil (resin-free).
