Window types and types

There are many ways of distinguishing windows, but some overlap. Here are some ways to specify a window type. There are different groups, which differ according to the type of opening or the number of wings. The type of installation can also be a feature of the window type.

Types and types

The types of windows can be differentiated in different ways, here is the overview:

  • Shape of the window
  • Function of the wings
  • Installation or location
  • special insulation effects - insulating windows
  • window material

Opening way of the window

Some window manufacturers distinguish the types of windows according to the way in which the wings are opened, although the types can of course also overlap here again. Here are the functions:

  • Standard function - turn-tilt function
  • Special function - only tilt function or sliding functions
  • Skylight and swing windows
  • Special types and fixed windows

Rotary-tilt function

Probably the most common function for opening a window is the turn-tilt function. With this function, the window can be tilted a gap far. With the turning function, the entire wing can be opened. This feature is so popular that it is no longer listed on most windows in the retail industry.

sliding function

For windows, the sliding function is rarely used in this country. Usually it is used only in balcony or patio doors in a horizontal direction. In other countries, however, the shift function is still frequently used in the vertical direction.

reversing function

The turning window is also referred to as a swing window or tilt-and-slide window. In the middle of the window sash it is suspended and thus movable. Especially on the upper floors, this feature is useful because the sash of the window can be completely turned around. This makes it easy to clean the window.

Location and type of installation

Next, the windows are often distinguished by their location. For example, there are swinging or turning windows both as skylights and as conventional vertical windows.

  • horizontal installation - flat roof windows - skylights
  • inclined installation - skylight - swing or turn windows
  • vertical installation - conventional tilt and turn windows, sliding windows or swing and turn windows
