Insert window

Dramatically increased energy costs and sharp regulations in the energy saving regulation. Sufficient reasons why replacing windows with modern thermal windows is the trend. For savvy do-it-yourselfers, window placement should not be a problem as long as everything is done following the new RAL guidelines. Below we have created an assembly instruction for inserting your windows.

Various reasons for renewing windows

There are many reasons why homeowners want to change their windows.

  • Requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance EnEV must be met
  • Increased energy costs are met with better insulated windows
  • In Germany, numerous old buildings are still equipped with single glazing and box windows

Window installation according to RAL guidelines

First, the old windows are removed. In order to use the new windows later on, following the guidelines of the RAL Quality Institute, it is not sufficient to proceed "classically". You must clean the windows clean, so that the necessary Kompi sealing tape actually seals. Because the window and door assembly according to RAL has changed significantly in recent years.

Step-by-step derivation to insert the windows

  • new windows
  • Kompi sealing tape (alternatively plaster strips)
  • Construction connection joint adhesive, silicone-free
  • mounting wedges
  • building foam
  • Hinterfüllschnur
  • window screws
  • Acrylic or silicone for grouting
  • drilling machine
  • Stone, wood and metal drills
  • Cordless Screwdriver
  • hammer
  • Cutter knife
  • spatula
  • different pliers
  • spirit level
  • Chalk or mason pencil
  • Whipping or guideline
  • Meterstab
  • silicone syringe
  • foremen
  • work light

1. Preliminary work

As mentioned earlier, you must clean the windowsills before installing the new windows. This is the only way to ensure that the compression sealing tape (Kompi tape) can seal efficiently and meet the EnEV specifications.

Then draw exactly where the window frame should run. Please note the special conditions for the distance of the window to the outside, in case you want to install a thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) on the facade later or later. There must be no thermal bridges between the facade insulation and the window connection seal.

2. Insert and wed window

Attach the compi-band according to the manufacturer's instructions around the window frame. Be sure to form tabs in the corners so that the tape can also effectively seal here later. Then the window frame is aligned and fixed using the mounting wedges.

Now the holes for the fixing screws are drilled. From the corners they should be positioned about 10 cm away. Depending on the window size, the distance between the individual screws is 70 cm on average.

Screws without dowels are used. Anchor clamps for windows with dowels form a thermal bridge, which can later be detrimental. Screws without dowels avoid this problem.

3. Seal the window

Between window reveal and window frame is now sprayed with PU foam. After curing, cut a joint in the foam inside and out again.

There, the backfill cord is stuffed into it. For this backfill cord to meet its requirements, it must be wider than the soffit and frame spacing, filling the joint as completely up to the sides. Now you can apply the Baufugenanschlusskleber (silicone-free) and seal between Kompiband (window frame) and window reveal.

Finally, the joint is closed with silicone or acrylic and pulled off flush.

4. Theses

After the window is set, the window sash (s) are hung in the window frame. After that you have to set the window. We provide you with the appropriate instructions in the link, in addition, the window manufacturer should also have a manual for adjusting the window enclosed.

Tips & Tricks

The Kompiband should be glued on the outside (to the outside of the plastered side) always in winter, when it is cold. The backfill cord prevents the glue on three sides, including the back, glued. If this happens, it can no longer compensate for the thermally different dimensions of the plastered window reveal and window frames and might even break.

With a blower-door test, you can later check that the entire building envelope is sealed as required. So of course in particular the construction connection between the window and soffit.

Whether you use silicone or acrylic for your building joint depends on the individual requirements. Silicone can also be applied when it is wet, and generally has the better properties under the influence of moisture. So it is particularly good to use on the window outside. Acrylic, on the other hand, can be easily repaired later and painted over with paint. Therefore, inside it is preferable if you want to paint the windows.
