Secure windows with shutters - does it make sense?

Burglary protection in windows is important. Anyone who wants blinds to his windows anyway often wonder if roller shutters are suitable for burglary protection. Whether you can actually break windows with roller shutters, and what to look for, read here.

Blinds burglary resistant?

Basically roller shutters are not burglar resistant from the outset. Although many assume that the roller shutter is a burglary protection, but that's not true.

Only special anti-burglar blinds, which are then also tested according to DIN, fulfill this purpose.. They are then as sole protection but also not sufficient. The windows must also have the appropriate protection class.

Problems of conventional shutters

pushed up

Conventional roller shutters have the problem that they can be easily pushed up if necessary from the outside.

With electric roller shutters this is only slightly, because the motor blocks pushing up. But you can still easily pulled out of the side guides after the short push up and thus easily overcome by a burglar.

Guide rails not stable

The side guide rails are not stable enough for most roller shutters without special burglary protection. It succeeds a burglar regardless of the shutter material therefore very easy to pull the shutter from the side guide.

burglary time

Burglaries often take place at dusk or even during the day. At these times, roller shutters are usually not lowered, and thus no effective protection.

This also applies to burglary-resistant roller shutters. Protection by the roller shutter is also there only if the shutter is actually lowered and locked.

Resistance classes for shutters

DIN 1627, which also defines the resistance classes for windows, extends this classification to roller shutters. After the DIN test, the same resistance classes from RC 1 to RC 6 apply to them as they do to windows.

Burglary-resistant roller shutters are only certified by three institutes in Germany:

  • the ift Rosenheim GmbH
  • the PfB GmbH & Co KG
  • the VdS damage prevention office

Burglar-resistant shutters must be professionally installed. As a buyer, the installation should be carried out by a specialist company. In addition, you should have a so-called assembly certificate handed over by the specialist after successful installation. This ensures that the installation has been carried out properly. Only then can a roller shutter meet the burglary safety class for which it is designed.

If an anti-burglary roller shutter is used, you should definitely use at least protection class RC 2. In special circumstances and good accessibility of the windows or in remote buildings and non-visible land higher protection classes are recommended.

No replacement for window lock

Even if a burglary-resistant roller shutter with a high degree of protection is used, it is not necessary to dispense with a corresponding protection class for the window. Ideally, shutters and windows should have the same level of protection.
