Widen windows without much effort

Many sills are only slightly wider than the thickness of the wall gives. This is often not enough for decorating with flowerpots or as a seat for the cat. The broadening is inexpensive with a newly drafted board and very stable with the right attachment.

First choice are wooden boards

Who wants to widen his windowsill, usually chooses wood as a material for the new plate. Theoretically, natural stone is possible, but is rarely used. Under the wood panels are low-priced chipboard as well as solid solid wood. The best choice depends on the intended use, budget and personal taste.

A stone windowsill can also be tiled. However, it should be noted that a simultaneous widening is possible only with an extended substructure. The simple sticking out of the tiles is not recommended because of the risk of breakage. In the case of tiles, it should also be noted that you have to replace the windowsill on a later move, for example, from a rented apartment.

Widen the windowsill with wooden plate yourself

  • Wooden board (at least 15 millimeters thick)
  • Possibly varnish or wood oil
  • abrasive
  • Maybe wooden blocks or bars
  • jigsaw
  • Tape measure or folding rule
  • pencil
  • sander
  • metal brackets
  • Flat wood screws
  • Normal or extra-long wall screws
  • dowel
  • drilling machine
  • Screwdriver or cordless screwdriver

1. Determine size and length

If you widen your windowsill, you can simply give the already existing windowsill a greater depth or let the board continue to run along the side of the wall as a storage platform.

2. Measuring

When attaching only to the old bank, you only need to measure the width. In the case of a window sill with shelf, the base plate must have the depth of the complete window sill depth. According to the course of the wall and the window position, you must measure the one- or two-sided recesses and saw out.

3. Plan attachment

The easiest way to fix the new wider sill plate with metal brackets. Pay attention to the possibly protruding old windowsill. Put the angles sideways. If this is not possible, you can reline the angle edges to the wall with wooden blocks or strips.

4. Install the angle

For each bracket, drill two holes in the wall that you previously marked by stopping the angles. After inserting the dowels, screw the angles under a protruding old sill with pre-drilled wooden strips or blocks as relining.

5. Edit the plate edge

If you are using a pressboard or MDF board, pay attention to the veneered face towards the room. If necessary iron on matching veneer tape. For solid wood panels, you should sand down the front edges and slightly round off.

6. Mount the board

Loosely place the board in its final position and lightly sharpen the screw holes in the top angular flanks. When screwing, make sure that the screws are no more than two thirds of the plate thickness.

Tips & Tricks

A small inward edge through an attached bar can optically conceal an old windowsill.
