Strip a wire

Wire is mainly produced as an electrical conductor. This also requires insulation of the wire. If now the wire is to be clamped to another component, this wire is disturbing and must be stripped. What options you have when stripping, you can read in this guide.

Wire is everywhere

Whether in the house, in the car or in other machines and devices - everywhere, where electrical circuits are present, also wire is needed. Every wire is isolated so that there is no danger to life and no short circuit with other cables can occur.

At the connection points, however, a secure contact between the wire and the connection point must be ensured. Therefore, you have to strip off the insulation here. There are two important points to consider in this stripping: the type of sheathing and the structure of the pipe.

Insulations and construction of wires

The insulation of a wire can consist of different plastics. Typical is a PVC insulation. Silicone is used in vehicles and everywhere where higher temperatures are expected, as well as a long service life in difficult conditions. Even paints can be used as insulation. The line itself can also be structured differently:

  • single or multi-stranded
  • from a massive wire
  • made of thin, interwoven individual wires
  • made of thin, not intertwined individual wires

Strip with the knife

Not infrequently, a simple knife is used for stripping. Mostly because the corresponding stripping tool is missing. But depending on the structure of the wire, there are significant disadvantages.

When stripping with the knife is carefully cut into the plastic sheath. Then the wire is pulled around the blade once all around or pulled the knife around the wire around. This is not a problem with solid wires. However, the difficulties become increasingly visible as the cross section of the conductor increases: the wire can be accidentally cut off.

Even with solid wire can be easily cut into this and there is virtually a breaking point. If the wire still has to be bent, it often breaks in this area. The breakage can also be delayed, which can be a real danger, especially in electrical installations. Therefore, only suitable wire stripping tools should be used.

Tools for stripping

In particular, two different stripping pliers are distinguished. The multifunctional electric pliers used in the automotive sector and the adjustable wire stripper. The former pliers are equipped with various holes that slightly overlap when compressing the pliers and thus pull off the insulation.

In order to use this pliers, the wire cross section must be known, because the hole diameter correspond to the common wire cross sections. With this pliers, it is possible to optimally strip cables made of thin single wires.

The adjustable wire stripper

The adjustable wire stripper is the typical tool of an electrician. Two legs can be compressed as far as an intervening spacer screw allows. Depending on how far this set screw is turned, a larger or smaller wire cross-section can be inserted. This pliers are especially suitable for stripping rigid wires. In a well-stocked toolbox, at least these two pliers should be used to strip wire.

Tips & Tricks

Especially in connection with stripping the wire is often bent solid. How to straighten an unintentionally bent wire straight, you can read here.
