With this technique you hollow out wood correctly

Wood is a wonderful material from which you can produce useful objects as well as works of art. The variety of processing options characterize the material particularly, it can also be hollowed out, for example. With the appropriate tool you can even dig a tunnel through a tree trunk or simply make a bowl from a thick wooden board.

These tools are suitable for hollowing out wood

To hollow out wood you need one thing above all else: high-quality, sharp tools. Sharpen all blades and use new wood drills. These manual tools help you to hollow out the wood:

  • Stecheisen and Klüpfel
  • Holzbohrer
  • adze
  • slicer
  • wood rasp

For more complex work electrical tool is recommended because it makes the work faster and easier from the hand. However, the cost of such devices are of course higher than if you do the hollowing out manually. The following power tools are suitable:

  • Drill with wood drills
  • trough Höhler
  • Mini Carver

So it is possible to hollow out a tree trunk

To excavate a tree trunk is at the same time muscular and fine work: The removal of wood from the center of the trunk requires a great deal of effort, but the fragile outer skin should not be damaged.

One way is to first divide the log into two halves, remove the wood core with the appropriate tools, and then reassemble the outer shell. Digging through an unscored tree trunk is much harder.

In this case, first use markers to mark how far you want to hollow out the wood. Then use the tool above to drive your project forward. We recommend leaving a "shell" several centimeters thick so that the trunk does not break.

Making bowls of wood

If you want to make a bowl of wood, take a thick piece of wood and bring it into shape. Who has a lathe, has the optimal tool, even the Troghöhler makes the work quickly succeed.

With a rasp, an adze, a planer, a chisel and a bob, the work will take a lot longer but can still succeed if you have enough stamina. Finally, a careful smoothing with first medium-fine and then fine sandpaper follows.

Tips & Tricks

Tighten your tool well before machining, so that it does not slip. This serves both to facilitate work and your safety.
