How to keep wood as a staircase on concrete

Even though the installation of a wooden staircase on concrete sounds simple, some pitfalls lurk in detail. Since a "dead" and a "living" material meet here, the design should be well thought out. Specialists advise against the use of construction foam of any kind.

Glue or screw

If the covering of a concrete staircase made of wood is to exist, there are two types of attachment available. The steps can be screwed or glued. Depending on the substructure, the decking of the concrete staircase can also be fixed with a combination of both fixings.

The surface bonding of the wood on the steps saves space and can be carried out in one step. In order to achieve optimum adhesion, however, the concrete substrate must be prepared. Depending on the type of concrete, the suction behavior may be different and in the worst case the adhesive "seeps" and thus also its effect in the concrete. A detachment of the wood, even after a long time, is the inevitable consequence.

Glued flat

If you want to dress stairs and use concrete adhesive, you may have to apply a primer or a primer. When gluing an exact and millimeter exact balancing of the stairs in advance is also required. Depending on the condition and condition of the concrete steps, unevenness and crooked gradients, even vertically, must be repaired.

If you do the wooden steps yourself, you should measure each step individually. Cardboard stencils are a practical aid for detecting even the smallest deviations between individual step surfaces. With cardboard templates as a saw template, the warping of the stairs in the turns can also be detected well.

With substructure screwed and / or glued

The alternative is a slatted base on which the wood coverings are glued or screwed. When measuring the steps, the cavities and the possibly necessary larger "edge nose" must be considered.

Building foam such as PU foam should never be used in staircases, as its swelling behavior is difficult to calculate and can quickly lead to the wood flooring becoming unstable. As support support in the cavities are special insulating rubbers.

Tips & Tricks

In DIY stores, you will often find custom-made construction on staircases. Although their swelling behavior is adapted, they generally represent the risk of noise development, which manifests itself in "crackling" stages.
