Heat wood stove properly - this is how it works

If you own a wood-burning stove or stove, you often find it hard to start the stove at the beginning. Often there is too much smoke that does not drain through the chimney, but spreads throughout the apartment. Then all the smoke detectors go off and you have to remedy the situation quickly. Here we show you how to properly heat the stove, so that no smoke is generated.

Heat the wood stove properly step by step

    Igniter for stoves

    • excelsior
    • small dry pieces of wood
    • dry branches
    • firewood
    • matches

    1. Air supply

First, all the air openings of the wood stove should be completely opened. In some ovens it is also necessary that the lower door in front of the ash tray remains open during firing. If the stove is only equipped with a large complete door, it should of course be closed.

    2. Build a tent

In the oven a little wood wool is inserted, on it comes a fireplace lighter or tiled stove lighter. If you have enough small wood, you can also achieve good results directly with wood wool. Lay small sticks or narrow pieces of wood like a tent over this little cheering aid.

    3. Match

Many owners of a wood stove light the stove with a lighter. This works well in the vast majority of cases. It is safer, however, to light the fire with a match. You can then put it in the oven right away.

    4. Continue heating

Wait a moment for the small pieces of wood to burn through. Then put on some tent-like, first medium sized pieces of wood. Never cover the whole fire completely, but put on about three pieces and repeat this after they have blown. Gradually, then larger wood can be placed. When the fire is almost blown, you can gradually close the louvers. First, the ventilation regulator is closed at the bottom of the door and then the upper one above the fire.

    Tips & Tricks

You must not light the wood stove with newspaper or cardboard. Newspaper is contaminated with printing ink, also binder and formaldehyde may be included. Therefore, it is actually prohibited in this country to light the stove with these materials. However, since the quantities are very small, most chimney sweeps do not take this approach very seriously and do not punish this form of heating. Strictly speaking, a chimney sweep can shut down the stove if you light the fire with a newspaper.
