Build wooden deck in just 3 steps

A cozy wooden deck in the garden or on the terrace is easy to build by yourself. However, you must ensure a sufficient distance from the earth and should not expose the deck to moisture. How to build a new wooden deck in just three simple steps is shown here in the manual.

Build a wooden deck step by step

  • decking
  • foil
  • bar
  • stainless steel screws
  • Terrassenplatten
  • Sand / grit
  • Cordless Screwdriver
  • drilling machine
  • Holzbohrer
  • sinker
  • saw
  • shovel
  • spirit level

1. Preparations

Although hardly anything grows under the deck, in many areas it is not wrong to put a dark foil under it. Spread some sand on the surface and lay the foil out smoothly. In arid regions, you can usually do without it. Then only sand or grit is spread under the new wooden deck. On top of this you place old terrace tiles on which the beams of the substructure will rest.

2nd substructure

The substructure consists of beams that form a rectangular frame on the outside. In between, beams are screwed in transversely to the laying direction of the decking boards. Depending on how strong the decking you have selected for your deck, the beams must be between 40 and 100 centimeters apart. The further the decking has to be transferred, the more likely the wooden deck resembles a ship's deck, as it will vibrate easily while running. Read the manufacturer's instructions on how far the stringers may be from each other.

3. Screw on planks

The screw holes in the decking should be pre-drilled to prevent the planks from tearing. In addition, you should deepen the holes with a countersink something, so the head of the screw can be better sunk later and does not break your bare feet at some point. The planks are laid transversely to the support beams and should each have a small gap to the next floorboard. To keep this gap evenly, use a thin board that you place in between when screwing the boards.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to provide an old stone terrace with a wooden deck, you can leave part of the stone slabs underground. If you want the new wooden deck to be a little bit higher, then stack two large plates on each other to increase the substructure of the wooden deck.
