Renovate wooden floor - 3 simple steps

Even if a wooden floor stays nice and natural for a lot longer than, for example, a floor made of PVC, the wooden floor has to be reworked at some point. But after the renovation, the floor looks like new again. The costs are manageable for a wooden floor renovation, but it does some work.

Renovate wooden floor - differences

First, you have to differentiate between the different types of hardwood floors. The fewest laminate floors can even be worked up. Even a real wood laminate can usually only be sanded off once and repainted. A real wood parquet, on the other hand, can usually be reworked several times.

A proper wood floor renovation is therefore usually only possible with real wood planks. Here, you can thoroughly sand down the topmost layer of wood and then protect the wood with a selected sealant.

Renovate the wooden floor step by step

  • Grinding machine / floor grinder
  • paint Roller
  • telescopic rod
  • lacquer bowl
  • spatula
  • hammer
  • Chisel / countersink
  • screwdriver
  • Sanding sheets different grain sizes
  • Lacquer / glaze
  • Wood putty / repair paste

1. Prepare the board floor

First, you should check the floor for damage. Stand somewhere nails or screws high, which must be sunk necessarily. You should replace a damaged screw completely, you can drive a nail with a sharp chisel or a sinker and a hammer into the wood.

2. Carry out grinding passes

Depending on the condition of the planks, you should start with a sanding curve of grain size 40 or 60. If the single plank is very round or worn, it may be necessary to choose an even coarser grit. Then you should take a close look at the planks to see if their thickness is sufficient enough to sand off any bumps.

Clean the floor after each sanding cycle, this is the only way to see where there are still unsightly spots in the floor. Then work your way up the grain of the sanding sheets in increments of 20, if possible. For a plank floor you should sand down to a grain size of 120. With a parquet floor you often have to grind even up to the 150 grit. The result will be very good, too.

3. Painting / glazing

Thoroughly clean the floor and only walk on socks on the ground. Start by painting or glazing in the far corner of the room. Always work backwards towards the door. You should make sure there is sufficient ventilation, but do not open any windows you can not access after painting.

The soil has to dry for a sufficient time before you can commit it again. Most varnishes and glazes should be applied in two coats. Look carefully at the manufacturer's instructions as to the drying phases between the operations.

Tips & Tricks

So that the floor can be sanded particularly evenly, there are rental shops for floor grinding in the hardware stores. With these large tools, the work becomes smooth and thorough, without you having to work for days with a small grinder.

Nevertheless you should compare the different DIY stores. The costs for the device should be compared with the prices of the grinding plates. Some hardware stores are bringing back the low rental costs for their devices via the accessories.
