Extend wooden posts - different fittings

Especially long wooden posts are also very expensive. But if you happen to have wooden posts that are too short for the project, you can extend them. Keep in mind, however, that transversely extended posts do not quite have the same load capacity. As you can easily extend wood posts, we show here.

1. Extend fence posts

A vertical fence post they can extend relatively easily with appropriate fittings. Instead of the special fittings, you can also use perforated plates here, which are screwed or nailed to the post and the extension from at least two sides. For a fence post, you should do this extension in the lower area as possible, as it is not so noticeable there.

2. Extend carport or pergola post

The vertical posts for a pergola or carport can also be fitted with perforated fittings. However, you should extend the transversal posts with galvanized steel connectors. These come in many different forms as a corner, angle or cross connection. Again, you have to screw the posts but still with the connector.

If a transverse post is to be greatly extended, a branch connector is more suitable, because you can install here just a vertical post as additional support at the junction. So you get even with an extended transverse post additional stability.

Extend the pole conventionally

If you have a great deal of craftsmanship, it is of course always better to mortise the wooden post expertly. However, if you are not sure how to do it right, we recommend the two upper variants, as you are guaranteed to succeed even as a beginner.

Tips & Tricks

The connectors are available from most manufacturers for posts with an edge length of 9 x 9 centimeters or 7 x 7 centimeters. The more accurate the posts are in the connectors, the greater the stability you can achieve with them. If you have thicker posts, you can avoid the ends accordingly. But it is also possible to undo narrow posts with boards, so that the post sleeve fits better over the post.
