Stain wood: paint or darken?

The word "pickling" is used in the wood sector in two ways: either it is a pickling or enameling or a chemical coloring. For this purpose, different means are available, on the one hand the strippers and on the other side the stain. No matter what goal you pursue with the pickling of wood, here are tips and advice for both variants.

Stain Wood: How to remove old paintings

For paint removal there are three different options: chemical paint removal, the use of hot air and mechanical abrasion scraping. The pickling always brings some chemistry with it, but largely prevents mechanical damage and charring of the wood.

Above all finer ornaments and profiled woods are hardly to be cleaned differently from old coats than by means of chemical means. There are two different types of paint strippers available to solve different coatings:

  • Alkaline strippers are also called leachers. With them, oil and Alkydharzlacke can be removed cleanly. Oil coatings are often found on older and antique objects, the lye dissolves the oily chemical compounds.
  • Solvent-based paint strippers work, as the name implies, with solvents. These agents are particularly suitable for the removal of acrylic paints, which are also called water-based paints. Acrylic coatings contain no drying oils, so they can only be removed by suitable solvents.

This is how you stain your wood properly

How to properly apply the paint stripper on wood surfaces? A sufficiently long exposure time is the most important factor when it comes to dissolving old layers of paint. Solvent-containing products generally work faster than peelers.

  • Apply the stripping agent with the brush to all surfaces
  • Cover for more effective exposure to foil
  • Leave the stripping agent working, pay attention to the instructions for use
  • in between, test how well the color dissolves
  • after a sufficiently long exposure time, remove the paint stripper with paint
  • Recommended tools: Spatula with stiff and flexible blade, putty knife for the depths

Attention chemistry! So you provide the necessary security

Strippers are never harmless to health, quite the contrary: solvents and alkalis should always be used with care. Only work in well-ventilated areas and ensure that children are not allowed access.

Protect yourself with chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and respiratory protection. So you do not get burned out and do not inhale toxic fumes. Alkalis tend to be less harmful to the environment and health, but that should not lead to carelessness.

Wood stain: This is how you stain surfaces thoroughly

Another form of stain is the chemical low-viscosity colorants, which serve to deepen or darken the wood tone. Wood stains offer many different shades, so that from a bright softwood quite a chic tropical wood imitation can arise.

You can choose from two different types of stains to color your wood in the appropriate tone. These bring different effects:

  • Dye pickles consist of dissolved color pigments, they deposit mainly in softwood and may darken this darker than the latewood.
  • Chemical stains attack the tannins in the wood, which are mainly in the dark areas of the grain. Thus, these agents deepen the wood structure and have a particularly strong effect on tannin-rich underground.

A guide to pickling wood

Pickling wood is almost easier than painting. First, of course, ensure a clean, grease-free surface, even old paint must be removed completely.

  • Thoroughly clean the surface
  • Lightly moisten wood with lukewarm water
  • allow to dry, sand high-grade fibers
  • Apply stain with a brush
  • always work in the direction of the grain
  • Swipe vertical surfaces from top to bottom
  • Remove excess stains after a short reaction time with a dry brush
  • let dry
  • Check color effect, possibly repaint
  • provided with a protective coating after drying

Note that the hue changes again with the topcoat, usually deepening or darkening. Try the color effect on a specimen before staining and stroking the original.

Prepare Pulverbeize

In former times craftsmen had to put together their stains themselves, today there are corresponding finished products to buy. In addition to the liquid substances and water-soluble powders are offered, which are to be set as follows:

  • do not use a metal container to apply: color changes threaten!
  • Fill powder into the container
  • add hot water in appropriate amount (see instructions for use)
  • Adhere strictly to the recommended mixing ratio
  • Stir thoroughly so that the powder dissolves completely

Tips & Tricks

Store your Pulverbeize in a dry environment, then it will stay with you for decades if necessary. You can prepare and use the powder at any time.
